Running multiple avatars

Hello people! I'm hoping someone can advise me how to install the client so that I can introduce my avatars to each other online for product testing. I've received very helpful information from a resident on how to do it on a PC (right-click desktop shortcut and edit preferences), but of course, that doesn't work with a Mac.

I know my machine reasonably well, but I'm definitely no techie, so help in simple language would be appreciated. I run an iMac with 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo, 1.5 GB RAM, OSX 1.4.10.

Thanks in anticipation :)

anybody makes this work?

I followed this question from the resident answers thread because I too have a Mac, and am intrigued by the idea of playing two avaters at once, but I was not able to bring up anything right clicking Secondlife in Finder. Just wonder if it worked for anyone else.

I followed the instructions here:

http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Help:Running_multiple_instances_of_the_Second_Life _client

1. Find the client in Finder (usually "Second Life.app";)
2. Right-click and select "Show Package Contents"
3. Open the Contents folder
4. Open the Resources folder
5. Open the "arguments.txt" file for editing
6. Add "-multiple" to the "arguments.txt" file and Save

but it doesn't say what to do after step 6.

Once I have one avatar logged on, I don't see any way to get another log on screen.

do I need to duplicate the application?

YES!! That worked, Step 7. is

7. Ctrl click on the Second Life Application, Select Duplicate to make a copy of it. Then Open it to create a new viewer window.

You shouldn't need to duplicate. Just go to the SecondLife icon in Applications and double click.

It works!

Thank you all for your responses. After some experimentation, and advice in-world from the Mac Users group, I discovered that the method suggested by ArchTx is the one that's quickest and easiest to implement. (Just double-clicking in Applications doesn't work, sadly.)

It takes a little while to get used to hopping between screens, but it's fun (and maybe a little spooky!) to have your avi face to face with your alt.

By the way, in case it's useful info for anyone, I've discovered that I need to repeat the process and then create a new copy after upgrades.

I get the message that SL is already running.

Yep, you need to make copies. I keep several copies of the client in a folder for when I want to run three accounts at once. Now if only I could get each copy to remember its own password. Ah well.

That's it, just run the program twice ^^

The Finder won't let you run the same copy twice, but you can do it from the shell. Once you have arguments.txt set up, execute it as:

/Applications/Second\ Life.app/Contents/MacOS/Second\ Life &

Adjust the path and name to match your version of reality. You can throw that into a little applescript app or something if you are allergic to using the terminal.

ArchTx lifesaver to Machinimatographers everywhere!

Thank you ArchTx, you are my lifesaver!!! :D

I was going mad trying to do my machinima between two computers (mine & someone elses), now I can finally do it on the one Mac with one acting avatar and one filming. I'd followed that original set of instructions but like most people I didn't know how the heck to open another window even after doing the arguments.txt command lol.

By the way, my first time ever posting on the forums but I was so forever grateful I just had to tell you. :)

I used the following arguments.txt file successfully (different one in each copy of sl)...

----------
-multiple
-purge
-noprobe
-port 13000
-login <avatar name> <password>
----------

This worked last time I tried it ... several versions ago. I had one icon for each av... no need to enter name / password.

I got the info from this forum.. don't ask me what the other lines are for lol

Another way...

is to open the Terminal utility and enter the following:

/Applications/Second\ Life.app/Contents/MacOS/Second\ Life -multiple

This will automatically open a second session of SL.

Just so you know.

Then i made a second copy an tried logging into that too but it continualy shut down my first copy of viewer open. Help? :P And all i wanted was to run same avatar but in two viewers :)
