Poor performance on Macbook Pro.

Hi all

I know this is probably old news, but I have had serious performance issues on the Mac SL viewer.

Compared to my partners Windows XP, and now Vista laptop, it runs with less CPU usage, faster frame rates.

I'm regularly in single figure frame rates and in high use sims, its a night mare.

am I the only one here with this?

its a dual core 1.86mhz original MBP, 2GB of ram, ATI X1600 128mb.

I do feel that the Mac viewer is very memory hungry, CPU intensive and not as well written as our Windows cousins..

thanks

What OS are you running on your MBP?

i think i have the same problem.
i'm very new to using mac and i thought, with a faster hd (7200) and a larger ram (2 GB) it should be less lagging when going to crowded or packed sims, but that was not the case.
when i went to search for skins and shapes, i crashed nearly every 15 to 30 min. it is really not funny!!! and each time i crash i have to shut down the system completely because i don#t know if there's also a safety grip like on windows computers (ctrl, alt, del)
i'm using leo x and just recently bought the computer, but regarding SL performance i am really disappointed.
have a great and happy easter anyway.

I have a duel core not a core 2 MBP with a X1900 256 meg video card and 2 gigs of ram, and I dont have any speed issues. One thing you can check is if you set the network speed to the setting to match your connection speed, the defualt setting is kinda low, Also check your draw distance try setting it to 96 meters which is what I use.

hi and thanx ... i did that, but my computer still keeps freezing so i have to completely shut it down, which of course is not the very nicest thing to do to a computer, i know, but i have no choice ... :-((( the draw distance is as low as 65, so it shouldn't interfere ... but still it bugs ... thanx goodness not every 30 minutes now ... now i can stay online for about an hours or so before it crashes ... :-((

by the way ... is there kind of like a safety grip as with windows (ctrl, alt, del)???
i would surely try to use that, as i think, shutting it down is not going to do the computer much good ...
happy easter!!

Well its Leopard ;) all patched up. but this was happening with Tiger too.

I just feel that the mac client is very badly written compared to whats running on PC.

I'm always in the low 10's to single figures in a lot of Sims. and this is with the graphics settings on low, and the draw distance set low. i've tweaked network settings as well. still poor performance

its just not good.

My Macbook Pro runs SL just fine. Reasonable frame rates at 350m, no particular lag - exept specific places where it seems to be the server rather then M'book.
3GB, 2MB download, 160 MB HD at 5200, leopard 10.5.2.
I am even able to run two invocations of SL without any serious problem.
Happy as a one button girl can be.

I should like it to become less hot, but then, I do not have to iron my clothes.
When running SL it consistently spins the fan at 6000.

Joyce,

If SL freezes, press command+option+escape which lets u force quit just SL without having to shut down the whole 'puter. A box pops up and u can just quit SL only and leave everything else on.

Good luck

Hi Joyce,

The option button is right next to the command button (the one with the little apple on it). So just press those two along with the escape button and u can force quit out of SL. I hope u don't have to too much :)

Good luck,
Jeni
