in all likelihood, most of you don't know me very well, if a'tall - that's explainable in that, with my super-neato, job-provided pb 17", i'd only just tried sl for the first time about three weeks ago... an eye-opening, meta-universe-expanding experience... well, you're all here too, so you know what i mean. :)

well, as luck 'round here tends to come in self-balancing pairs, the very next week, i lost my job (lol, fortunately -not- due to my newfound sl-addiction!! :) - hence, also losing access to that coveted portal into the sl-verse.

i learned much in the all-of four days i had inside... and since then, i've been placating myself by scouring the forums and every other sl resource out there... and learning just how much -more- there is to learn and create with sl.

so, anyhow, boohoo... i cannot participate in tonight's logonathon. to molify myself whilst pouting and watching the homepage's inworldpop figure creeeeep upwards, i did some window-shopping over at owc...

1) i presume that the newer of my two machines (1999 bronze/lombard powerbook) is terminally limited by its 8meg vram card, even if i upgrade the sys from 10.2.x to 10.3.9? well, plus it's a g3 machine - is sl's g4 req. 'hardwired' into the software (i.e., would it cancel at launch just 'cuz it's not on a g4)? could upgrade to the g4 option that's out there, but i think, because of the vram ish, that good ol' gonzo the bronze is generally a lost cause, as far as sl's concerned...

2) but maaaaaaybe more likely, is to take the old 1996 7600 desktop ppc, throw in the pci g4 upgrade (800mhz tops - is sl's 1ghz also a 'hardwired' req.?), throw in the pci ati 128meg vram card, install os x... already have the third slot taken by 10/100 ethercard. (plenty of drivespace already - picked up some cheapies on ebay a year or so ago.:)

would that work?? :) or would it be worth the effort - is the old mb bus/old scsi drive setup still speed-prohibitive? would anything else prevent sl to launch on such an old machine?

as is, it would probably take awhile just to earn the pieces, but it'd be a 'faster' option to an sl-capable machine than holding out for a new off-the-shelfer... whadday'all think?? :)

Yes, you need a minimum of a G4 to run SL.

As for upgrading, just buying a Mac Mini or a used PowerMac G4 would probably be a better option. With a PowerMac G4, you could more easily upgrade the video card and RAM, and performance would be far greater than anything you could get by attempting to upgrade a 7xxx. Honestly, though, a Mac Mini would probably be the better buy, performance-wise. Obviously, the Mac Mini's 32MB video RAM is a bit on the low side, but SL will still run.

It's not what you want to hear, I'm sure, but the cheapest option for running SL is to just do it on a PC. For the cost of upgrading your 7600, you could construct a PC that would outperform even an upgraded G4 or a Mac Mini.

i sure would someday like to have a nicely maxed-out pc for a playstation - sl/ms flightsim - but that's probably all the use that would get. :) mac's my working platform, so any speed grade-up would usable to me in any number of ways (new test webserver... or at least make it into a better jukebox lol).

the disk intensity of sl (not to mention osx in general) is what i suspect would be the main drag - but the replacement drives are even faster than the ones before, scsi-2-something-or-other... so actually, maybe it's not such the big deal. now, that slow old cd drive... -that- definitely needs replacing too, lol :)

i will defer to the experts on this, buuut... seems to me, vram is king, as far as sl is concerned. figured up a package price last night for comparison's sake, and i'm just not sure i could be satisfied with the money spent on a minisys with its nonupgradable card... would hafta just go whole-hog at that point... :)

dunno; have to see what the rest of this year brings, lol... certainly would like another top-of-the-line pb, but there will probably be g5 pbs before i've enough to splurge like that again. i'm kinda intrigued about the 7k maxout idea; priced that up too, and even with replacing all the mutt-ram with fresh ones - only $750!! seems a lark-worthy project... and i'm a big 'recycle/reuse' kinda person :) especially when it comes to big ol' desktop machines.

thanks for your thoughts... helped clarify mine. :)

p.s. hehe sorry - five smileys! (oh, six if ya count the subject line... think i'm rarely this 'smiley' in rl lol - but i feel smiley conversing with knowledgeable folk. such a change of pace from around here haha :)

p.p.w. shit! lol... seven.
