I was logging into SL on my Sony Vaio laptop and the graphics were horrible and the lag unbearable. I decided to try my iMac, WOW! amazing difference! Problem is....it crashes, screen goes black, the prims on my hair turn to grass, my body looks naked or turns colors often, I am just a hot mess in SL! I am running on an iMac 24" 10.4, 1GB of memory, and graphics card is a NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT. Is there anything I can do to get SL working properly for me using the iMac? I have the graphics set just below the highest on SL and still have this issue....please if there is anyone out there that knows how to fix this I would be forever grateful!

Hi,

I don´t have a solution offhand, but I have run SL on several kinds of intel iMacs without problems. From the symptoms displayed I would first suspect a graphics card glitch.

According to JIRA there were problems with an application called MacLampsX, that would cause rapid flickering of textures (http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-1473).
Do you have something like that installed?

Other than that i did not find any reports of incompatibilities between SL and your graphics card. So it should work.

I guess your computer could also have a hardware problem (overheating the card), but I have never personally seen something like that.

In general, I found that updating to MacOs 10.5.2 and installing the subsequent graphics card update helped a lot on the iMac. The viewer tended to freeze regularly, which drove me nuts. That issue was solved by the new card drivers. But your problem sounds more fundamental.

For experiemental purposes: have you tried different viewers? Maybe there is something in your specific version that your graphics card dislikes?

Thanks for your reply! I have checked high and low and it seems not many people are having any issues with SL and iMac being compatible.

I don't have MacLampsX installed and ran a fast search just to make sure...

As far as a viewer, you mean the version of SL, correct? If so, I was running on 1.22 last night, upgraded to 1.23 and still the same issues.

I suppose it may be time to upgrade the iMac itself...Thanks!

Is the Mac OS completely updated? 10.4.11 with the other current updates?

I am on Tiger not Leopard...but when I called apple care they told me tiger is compatible with SL and it was the graphics card that was of importance not the version of OS..all other updates for Tiger are done...I prefer Tiger over Leopard so do not want to switch to Leopard.

My partner had occasional problems like that, but we never got around to finding the problem because one of the shiny new metal iMacs caught his eye :D

set your imac to low performance first

try settings on the low end, see what happens. then raise them gradually if it works better, you are running only 1 gig of ram which is pretty low for sl on mac. also, keep in mind Tiger is no longer supported by SL.

Blaze Thanks! Soooo.....I tried running on the snowglobe viewer which improved things for me, but when wearing any prims they quickly become all sorts of colors, hair turns green, pants with prims turn odd textures, etc...

IF I upgrade to Leopard and up my 1GB of ram to 3GB would this def resolve the issue?

I have spent so much $ in SL from running it on my laptop that I hate to just lose everything and throw the towel in on SL, BUT the laptop was bogging down and just was not cutting it anymore in SL, which is why I moved to my iMac in the first place...

IF this resolves the issue I am more that happy to move to Leopard IF I MUST, but articles I have read on the net said upgrading to Leopard has not resolved anything for may Mac users....do you personally run on a Mac? If so, what viewer and what Mac?

Thanks again...I am soooo frustrated with this whole situation and have been stuck inside my SL home for days afaid to go out not knowing what my avi looks like to everyone else and constantly asking friends 'Am I dressed?' lol
