Need more info, Margaux

Can you hear typing when you chat? Can you hear others doing those annoying yells at dance clubs? If so, Does the little control box for audio show up at the bottom of the screen? (you know, the one with the on/off and volume slider) If the control isn't there at a location with music (like a dance club), then OPEN your SL Prefs and fix the Audio tab. There's a check box to enable audio and movies.
If that's not it, then more info is needed... What: Version of the OS? is it 9 or 10.4.3,etc.? (Look in the menu APPLE, ABOUT THIS MAC) Version of Quicktime...start QT and look in QUICKTIME PLAYER/ABOUT QUICKTIME PLAYER.
And if you know the type of music that's not playing (mp3,ogg), that would help...but not required...start with the first two questions.

OK, my money is on your sample rate setting...
Go to Audio MIDI Setup (MachintoshHD/Applications/Utilities), in the 'Audio Devices' check that the Audio Output sample rate format it set to 44100.0Hz. Anything else == no sound in SL. Some applications seem to automatically change this setting, it had me foxed a few times...
Hope this helps.

Good tip, Robbie Dingo! Didn't know that one Another thought: Try listening to a stream in your Quicktime Player. Pick one out from Shoutcast.com. If it plays, then I'll scratch my head and think some more. If it doesn't play, then update QT.

Hope this helps. One program that does it is Audacity. Changes output to 96000.0Hz. I have a Bluetooth headset, and SL kept playing through it instead of regular audio. Took a while to figure out the Audio MIDI setup fix, and only yesterday realized it was Audacity causing the change.

Yes, Somon, I also have Audacity and it was somehow active before I lost track with sound in SL. Seems that this is the reason.

I must have other problems
10-08-2006 23:54
Recently I was getting an error message when I started the SL client, that my Bluetooth headset was off or out of range. Following tips from this thread, I did find out that my MIDI settings had changed, and I changed them back to what they should be.
Unfortunatley it hasn't helped.
I even moved com.apple.audio.AudioMIDISetup.plist from the Library to the Desktop, to no avail. I've rebooted, run the Disk Utility and even booted into single user mode and run fsck. Nada.
Any suggestions?

GarageBand might help
10-11-2006 04:54
I had the same problem a while back, with SL and when playing some types of video files (MPEGS and WMV files). A fix I found onlike was to open GarageBand, create a project, play it, and close GarageBand.
This apparently resets a value in the Audio Midi Setup which you *should* be able to do manually. Give the GarageBand "fix" a go.
