I'm new to Second Life and just downloaded the Mac software. I dragged all three files to my Applications folder, then doubled-clicked on the green-hand icon to launch SL. The green-hand quickly expanded suggesting that it was launching, but then nothing. I hit command-tab to see what apps are now running and see that SL is not in the list!
Any ideas as to why I don't see a window for Second Life or any indication that it is running?
I'm running SL on OS X 10.5.3 on a MacBookPro purchased one year ago. My machine has: 2.2 GHz Core 2 Duo, GeForce 8600M GT, 2 GB RAM, etc. so I don't think it relates to a hardware requirements shortfall.
I've been through the various help files and this forum, but didn't find anything helpful.
Suggestions?

Have you checked Console to see exactly why it crashes?

make sure you made the graphic update (the one that was released with 10.5.2). It's on the apple support site. Also, try to download the Release Candidate (aka windlight) version on Linden website, and run it.

My MBP's Console shows a long repetitive sequence of these 6 nearly identical messages:
6/4/08 12:39:59 PM [0x0-0x88088].com.secondlife.indra.viewer[1256] LogLock::LogLock: failed to get mutex for log
<the above message repeats 4 times, followed by>
6/4/08 12:40:00 PM [0x0-0x88088].com.secondlife.indra.viewer[1256] The file /crashreporter.app does not exist.
6/4/08 12:40:01 PM com.apple.launchd[162] ([0x00x88088].com.secondlife.indra.viewer[1256]) Exited with exit code: 1
So how should I interpret this? What's the solution?

SL Release Candidate fails with "Bus error"
06-05-2008 07:00
As suggested, I downloaded and installed the Release Candidate dated 22 May 08, and it also failed on launch. Here's what my MBP's console report says happened:
6/5/08 9:24:45 AM [0x0-0x96096].com.secondlife.indra.viewer[1289] LogLock::LogLock: failed to get mutex for log
<this repeated 4 times, then>
6/5/08 9:24:55 AM com.apple.launchd[164] ([0x0-0x96096].com.secondlife.indra.viewer[1289]) Exited abnormally: Bus error
So, something very strange is going on here. I make it a practice to do all the software upgrades from Apple as they are announced.
Suggestions?

question about tech support
06-05-2008 11:03
As I noted in my previous messages, the newest version aborts with a bus error. The previous version aborts with an error of another kind.
As a new user with Basic privileges only, I am under the impression that I cannot obtain tech support from Linden Lab. Is that correct?

If you don't pay to play, no tech support for you (or me). You are not alone: http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-7320;jsessionid=56700BC60EAEBE6265FCAAB085DD96FB Lots of PowerPCs, but some Intels, too. After all that SL mess, have you run any fix-it utils on your MBP? Do you know about AppleJack? See: http://applejack.sourceforge.net/-Victoria

the only time i've had it try to launch and close, with no word... the preferences were messed up. Its possible they got that way the first time running if there was some server or connection error. SL is programmed very poorly. Delete the Second Life folder in your Application Support folder.. which is in your home folders library, then copy the Second Life.app back from the DMG you downloaded into your Applications folder and run it again.
may or may not work to fix it, but its at least really starting over from scratch, as just deleting the app file doesn't get rid of everything.

Model Name: MacBook Pro 15" Model Identifier: MacBookPro2,2 Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo Processor Speed: 2.16 GHz Number Of Processors: 1 Total Number Of Cores: 2 L2 Cache: 4 MB Memory: 3 GB Bus Speed: 667 MHz ATI Radeon X1600 OS X 10.5.2 Second Life 1.19.1 (4) I have been running SL fairly happily on my MacBook Pro for over a year recently upgrading to Leopard. I suffer a bit more lag on this machine compared to my newly acquired iMac. I haven't tried the new release candidate viewer yet but when I do I won't delete this one until I know I can function outside of the usual SL hiccups. All I can suggest is that you try the re-install as suggested by someone else and double check the system requirements and check for patches for graphics cards or Leopard. I haven't rushed to upgrade Leopard either... always leary of change when things are working okay! LOL Otherwise hunt around the JIRA for similar issues to what you're having and mine the forums...someone more technically astute than yours truly will eventually be able to help you out Hang in there and good luck! It'll be worth it when you get it sorted.
