When i run SL, my macbook pro will go so probably twice as hot as normal times, and the battery uses up really quick, is it because of the graphics cards or some other technical thing i have missing?

Does any of you have the same problem?

the harder your computer works, the more heat it will produce and the more battery power it'll use...

The fans should speed up to help the heat problem, but that also drains the battery faster as well.

Certainly, SL puts a strain on your cpu and gpu, so they get hotter, even really hot.

On the other hand, it is also possible that your air passages for cooling are full of couch lint. it might be worth having a technician look at it, or googling for how to clean the dust out.

You can get good cooling pads that help some. Sometimes I put an ice pack under the hottest part of my HP laptop 8-)

SL makes my macbook pro run burning hot to.

Unless you need or want the high fps, you can slow sl down, and make it run cooler and longer on a battery.

Just add the following line to the settings file

On Mac OS X, specify command line parameters as follows:
Create a file called Second Life.app/Contents/Resources/arguments.txt
List the parameters to use, one per line.

That's where you find it

--cooperative 60

add this line, where the number is the amount of ms to do nothing (higher means slower)

I run my Macbook Pro on AC *and remove the battery* when I'm running SL. It's the only way to keep it cool.

Thats because you are underclocking your processor! of course it will be cooler, it will also run slower...

heres a link to Apple that explains this...

Fine, so how do I convince it to underclock the processor without removing the battery? Oh, I can't. Thanks a fucking lot, Apple.

thats the easiest way to underclock on them... you *can* do it otherwise in the EFI, but its a major pain and easy to mess things up drastically.... not something for most users to worry about.

I dont have much of a cooling problem though... if i have my 9600GT turned on in SL most places in SL my fans run at around 5500 - 6000 rpm, but it runs fine around 80 - 85º C

Usually I'm not doing much where I really need the 9600 and leave the 9400 going and it can stay at 75 - 80º C around 4000 rpm

I do not like how long it waits to spin up fans so i control my fan speeds manually when using intensive things like SL.

not really... pretty standard operating temps for a higher end laptop being worked hard.... a CPU at 85º isnt that bad when its max operating temp is 105º

Staying cool

I use a mac utility called smcFanControl:

http://www.eidac.de/?p=134

You can set your mac's fan speed on your own to keep your macbook from heating up to begin with. I set my fan to 5k RPM as soon as I start SL and my macbook pro stays cool (the max fan speed is 6k).

The fan is not very quiet at that speed but it is better than letting the computer heat up enough to keep your coffee warm.

smcFanControl is free too :)
