Thinking about replacing my aging and tired g5 dual 2.0 with a newer quad core 2.66. All I really want is for the new mac to be able to run at ultra, maxed out everything except draw distance (not to important for me) The thing bothering me is the video card offered (nvidia gt120) it seems to be a weak link in the chain, any suggestions for a better card? Or should I just switch over to a windows platform and go crazy on upgrading that (cheaper yes, but I do hate windows) I just want sl to run as good as it can mac wise......I have been through the g3, g4 and g5, should I stay on the path?

Get a PC with a fast Nvidia card.
The GT120 in a Mac Pro is absurd.

I am what you might call a "mac zealot", but frankly buying a mac pro for second life sounds absolutely ridicolous.
get a new iMac. They are faster than you'd imagine.

its not just for second life, SL happens to be the only thing that I would want to look good. I run photoshop, final cut, peak etc etc. On my g4 it is dedicated to protools and toast only. This g5 still is fine for everything else, except sl...the quality is going downward all the time. I used to be able to have water reflections on and the cool windlight settings (clouds moving blah blah blah) Any suggestion is good, a newer video card? I have the ati radeon 9600 pro in this. other specs...... Dual 2 Ghz powerPC g5 6.5 gb DDR sdram
Does the imac look good? Macs are what I understand the best, having to learn the 8 million ways a windows machine can be put together is really not looking fun. I like the limited choices mac offers, and I know the os Having this g5 since 2004 (I think) with no problems makes them worth the cash. If I had to close nortons security scan every day and still get a messed up comp I would be rather pissed.
I will make a field trip to a fry's store and see if they can download sl into one of the comps there.......seeing is probably the best I guess

For what it's worth, I'm on 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac with a ATI 2600 graphics (4 gb RAM) and SL works beautifully for me, even on Ultra settings. I also run photoshop CS3, LightWave and Maya with not problems. I love this machine!

Can you tell me how you set the Preference sitting for SL? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I have the white 2009 MacBook (2GHz C2D, Geforce 9400m) and SL is great, even on ultra settings.
