I have a problem getting the land texture to appear. At my shop, it is grass, but all I see 99% of the time is brown mud. I have asked other friends if it happens to them and they don't seem to have the problem on their windoze peecees, so I'm wondering if its a Mac bug? I've tried everything to get it to appear - I was able to make it appear a couple times by clearing my cache, filling my field of view with nothing but ground and relogging. That seemed to work maybe 3 out of 7 times. One day I reported it as a bug, and 3 seconds after I sent the bug report, it miraculously appeared. That's the only time I've ever seen it appear without me doing all sorts of relogging, cache clearing, group changing, rubbing my belly while tapping my head, etc... Is there any trick to get it to appear that I don't know about? BTW - these "undocumented tricks" like changing groups tag to make invisible AVs finally appear is a "feature" not normally found in commercial products. Way to "innovate" LL! (pbbbbtttthhh) I'm running the old swivel-head flatscreen iMac with about a gig of RAM.

This isn't just a Mac problem.
It's caused by slow texture loading for the ground textures. There are 4 layers, starting at 0 altitude, and the lowest layer by default is this rather ugly mud color. Sometimes you can fix it by changing ground detail level and then cahnging yuor group... and then changing back. Changing groups is an ugly workaround for a lot of problems because it forces the client to reload many things that may have gotten lost. If you're getting packetloss, though, it will probably not help.
I don't know why the default layer 0 texture is so horrid. I wish they'd use one of the sand textures instead.

Thanks Argent

I'll try that. These "undocumented workarounds" are idiotic and indicative of something that seriously needs fixing before an exponentially cascading problem is realized. But these days it takes a hurricane to get things done right, so I guess we just stick our fingers in the dyke and pray for better weather. I'm of the impression that LL's sky and ground are amongst the biggest problems. For example, last Easter, when they put a big Easter Egg sun and moon in the sky - things lagged so bad it was impossible to do anything but sit and wait for it to be over. Thanks for the "undocumented workaround" Argent, I'll try it and if it works, I'll post here. From: Argent Stonecutter This isn't just a Mac problem.

From: Argent Stonecutter changing ground detail level and then cahnging yuor group... and then changing back. Nope. Didn't work - tried it several times in a variety of ways. But thanks anyway. Seems the only way to get it to pop is file a bug report - wait 5 secs, if it doesn't pop, file another bug report, wash, rinse, repeat until you get banned for bug report abuse. And no, dancing naked around a bonfire rubbing a dead chicken on a voodoo talisman doesn't work either. It only annoys the dead chicken.

One solution that worked in Windows: RE Ground Mud
07-10-2006 07:39
I was having similar issues on my windows version after 1.10 and subsequent patches. The only way I made it stop doing that was full uninstall/ reinstall & then changing Avatar Detail in preferences (..of all the cockeyed things) -- I turned OFF Bump Mapped and Cloth (highest detail radio button) and changed it to Bump Mapped (the midle one). Otherwise, all my other settings are now running well at maximum detail (till it gets messed up again Wednesday-- Oiy.)
It took me about 10 bug reports, 4 talks w/ Live Help, a new (expensive) graphics card and several full reinstalls and changing the settings one at a time to see what was mucking things up. You might try this and see if it works on your Mac & I sure hope it does. I realize how thoroughly aggravating that problem is.
