Hi!

I'm thinking about buying an iMac. Question is which machine I should buy. How big is the speed difference between the ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT and the ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO?

How much FPS are you having with these machines?

Thanks!

Got a new 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with ATI Radeon Pro graphics card. This machine is absolutely AWESOME! running SL. I cranked up all the settings to ULTRA, 250 meter draw distance, the works and it runs SL flawlessly. Even some anti aliasing (to smooth jaggies for pictures) was no problem, however noticed a small decrease in performance. Been a Mac fan for many years and its great to see SL running well on OSX now (haven't tried it on the windows/bootcamp version, no reason to install that on my machine).

Great! I already had the chance to do a short test with this machine (the 20" with the same graphics). I couldn't do very much testing. But what you are telling sounds really cool.

Question is how the difference to the smallest machine is.

I bought the then-highest-end iMac of a year ago and was on DSL at the time. Use FIOS for my connection now. Texture loading could be better but that is SL for you, overall a pretty sweet machine. [One of my first comments after getting the iMac: "is 40 fps good?" :) ]

I got the 2.8ghz imac. Hard to keep it from freezing. Seems to be a bit better when I max out the fan, but I don't feel it's worth shortening the lifespan of the fans.

Freezing?

My experience with the 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with ATI Radeon Pro graphics card couldn't be more opposite. I run it in SL sometimes 16 hours a day in varying conditions. Can barely hear the fan whir even in very active areas. I use a pretty large cache setting and keep it on ultra settings in graphics. My overall experience with the Imac has been nothing short of fantastic. I did have a few problems converting to a new viewer on my old machine. Got some freezing and crashing, but, I removed every file related to SL and reinstalled, that seemed to clear things up.

Need advice on purchasing a 24" iMac

Hi I have a $2000 budget to buy a computer at work (no exceptions). I am an educator so I get a good price. I can only afford to get 2 of the following 3 upgrades;

1) Upgrade ram from 2GB to 4GB
2) Upgrade ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO w/256MB to NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS w/512MB
3) Upgrade Processor from 2.8 to 3.0s GHz

What will give me the best SL performance?

I'd get the 4GB RAM and the 8800GS video card. The RAM may be considerably cheaper from someone other than Apple.

The 2.8GHz CPU is more than adequate.
