my iBook died last night, so until i can replace it i'm down to my backup machines, which are various g3 iMacs. are there any older viewers still available that will work with these? i understand performance will probably be laggy. i can live with that, the alternative being no performance at all.

thank you,
kitten

I doubt there's a version that'll run on a G3 iMac because of the G3 CPU and ATI Rage graphics. What version of the Mac OS are you running?

Try ajaxlife.net. It should work for those needs.

I was going to suggest a G4 CPU upgrade, but that won't help since you need at least a Radeon 7000 to run Second Life even on a G4.

thanks, but i don't think an iBook's or iMac's processor can be upgraded like that. of course, i would be delighted to be wrong about this

I did find one G4 upgrade for a G3 iMac, but it's been discontinued and even if you got a used one or old stock (which you probably could) the video card would be an insurmountable problem.

I would suggest doing what I did when my Mac mini proved inadequate for SL, and get a cheap PC as a "wintendo". All my PC is used for is SL.

I wouldn't use Ajaxlife myself, the security implications if someone compromised their server are dire.
