Hi all, just wondering if anyone has any ideas. I'm getting a bit frustrated to say the least.

On and off, for what seems to be for ever now my iMac has periodically had problems with SL. This is mainly freezes, with the occasional lock-up. The freezes are driving me nuts. It's got to the point now over the last couple of days where SL is pretty much unusable to me on my iMac. Up until recently things seemed to have calmed down a little for me and I could actually use SL without too many problems, but as I said the last few days have been unbearable.

Spec wise I'm running an 2.16Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac, 2GB ram, ATI Radeon X1600, on 10.4.11.

Funny thing is that my iBook 2.4Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB ram, Intel GMA X3100, on 10.5.2 run SL absolutely fine. This is also using a wireless connection as opposed to ethernet as the iMac is. I really would have expected the iBook to perform about the same if not a little worse than the iMac, with it only having the intel graphics chip and a wireless connection.

Btw, I'm mainly running the Emerald viewer these days, the regular viewer is even worse!

So my question is, what suggestions does anyone have as to what may be causing my problems?

I have a sneaking suspicion that I may be as wise upgrading the iMac to Leopard, and am hoping it's not the graphics card as I'm sort of stuck with that!

Was having the same problem -
Try going into Library - Caches - Second Life and dragging that folder into the trash. That file gets huge!

I pretty much do that on a weekly basis, as you say it can get huge.

So far I think this may be my main option. Just need to find a nice cheap retail pack to put on my iMac now!

Mmm... Just been looking on ebay, no cheap ones to be had, they seem to be going for full original price, or thereabouts. Even rang my local apple retailer to see if they had any in stock and they'd just sold the last one this morning :(. They did suggest I try ring Apple direct as they thought there was a possibility that they may just send me a copy... no such luck though.

Looks like I'll be keeping an eye on ebay for a few days then!

I have the same system with the following differences: 3GB ram and 10.6.2...

My system also freezes from time to time - since *hm* two or three weeks I have this problem.

Well, it's not totally freezed: just all actions which I can do are frozen: can't walk, can't talk, can't do anything
But I see other avatars passing by, see what they write, see new group-notices, ..., ...

I am confused, I don't know why it happens (is it really a problem when zooming with the camera - when beeing in appearance mode, when building,... this are the situation it really often happens) and it happens with different viewers (Emerald, Release Candidate, Snow Globe).

Clearing cache doesn't really change anything, this problem must be based on anything else...

That's what I've been thinking.

I submitted a ticket to LL, but that was unfortunately closed as I had been using a third party viewer, so I followed their advice and downloaded the official viewer.

Things are just as bad, if not worse. I freeze and move, freeze and move alternately for a couple of seconds at a time, a couple of seconds freeze followed by a couple of seconds use etc.

Anyway, I reopened the ticket explaining all of this, so I'll report back if I get any fixes.

Oh that's a shame. Then it must be the other "little" thing I did.

Before switching to 10.6.2 two weeks ago - I manually cleared all the caches and other trash and defragged the drive.

This iMac used to crash once or twice a year - but for the past few months, it was going into a dead freeze every half hour. Haven't crashed since the upgrade - and I've really been pushing it.

Oh - and I don't use third party viewers - but I did uninstall SnowGlobe.

A quick update...

Just updated my iMac to 10.5.8, not really ready for Snow just yet.

I did reopen my ticket to LL and got nothing useful back. They just said that before they would re-close the ticket that I should look at my connection and graphics card. As I said in my OP, I can't do anything about the graphics card, and I can run SL just fine using the same connection on my MacBook.

Anyway, now just time will tell. Have only had a little play in SL since I upgraded. Had a couple of initial glitches. My groups had all vanished, my current location wasn't showing correctly at the top of the screen, and I couldn't TP without getting logged out. So I cleared the cache and rebooted my mac. Those problems now seem to have sorted themselves.

As for the freezes... probably to early to tell really, but nothing yet.
Will report back if this is still the case in a week or so.

Yes Ive been having this issue for over 4 weeks now. Never had it before in over 2 years. Now I am lucky to stay logged on over 5 minutes. I use an Imac OSX 10.4.11. I have submitted tickets and reported a bug. If you are all having this same issue please do the same so that they will listen. I am at my wits end with this.
I have cleared cache, uninstalled and reinstalled, etc etc but nothing works. This is definitely a bug. I had to upgrade my membership so that they would even look at my ticket and still I am getting nowhere.
I dont get any crash report I just freeze then if I dont quite I get the message "you have been logged out, region may be experiencing difficulty etc"
