I have A 17" G5 OS 10.4.11 (Not an Intel)
SL acts, slowly, erratically and now always freezes not long after after connecting.
I cannot say what SL version I am using - can't find where its listed! I downloaded it last week when it was offered so I presume it is the latest and appropriate most appropriate version. I see from the forum I am not alone in having problems. Is it worth the effort trying to get it working therefore?

If you are creative, are interested in meeting and collaborating with people from around the world, enjoy attending live music, theatre, and 3d art events, have a sense of adventure, and/or enjoy exploring things you've never seen before, then yes, it is well worth it.

Is it worth the effort? I'd say, absolutely.
Is the latest SL viewer going to ever run smoothly on your G5? It might, with some tweaks. I was still running SL on a G4 MDD last fall. It's not nearly as functional as on my newer MacBook Pro, but it still worked then.
Best of luck.

I've tweaked and tweaked but it still freezes! Guess you've answered my question though - Get a new computer! thanks for your thoughts all the same and I'll put off the pleasure of second life until I've saved up enough.

Probably the biggest questions are: What video card do you have in that old G5 Mac? What is your CPU speed? How much RAM do you have?
In short, a G5 Mac might run SL, but will probably perform pretty poorly. It may be possible to upgrade RAM and Video card to a high enough level for it to work, but more likely you'd be better off saving for a new iMac and trying with that.
I used to run SL on an old first-generation Mac Mini, and that was just barely enough capability to access SL at all.

G5 woes

I've been running sl on a g5 for a couple years with no problems (except for a memory leak show stopper with a couple of the recent SL "Release Candidates" It appears to me that changes they've made recently are killing the G5 (at least the 10.4.11 version I'm running). Not only the release candidate versions are borked now, but the regular viewer is also having such memory leaks that the machine crashes and requires a restart. My workaround is to go back to version 1.19.0.5 build of SL, this works perfectly, but not very pretty to look at.
The fix may be to upgrade to 10.5 osx which I believe lindens do most of their testing on.

G5 Woes

Thanks - an earlier version did work O.K and it is only downloading the latest version which has proved problematic. Is it feasible to revert however? I'm not particularly competent when it comes to I.T matters - in other words it has got to be a very simple procedure if I am going to follow it successfully!

Love SL

SL is great fun and a wonderful way to socialize all with people from all over the world. There are also some real world issues and sites that are wonderful and interesting. But...
I have an iMac that I purchased in November. It had been running SL wonderfully until May. Then, everything stopped working. It seems as though some data is not getting through. I cannot cross a sim border, whether teleporting, flying or walking. When I try any of those, I crash.
I am premium member and own land. I am unable to see land information. It all comes up blank. Also, my group list is sometimes empty. The graphics are still great and the speeds are good as long as I stay in the sim that I log into.
I have had a support ticket in with the Linden's since the beginning of May and have met with much frustration. There is still no resolution to my issue and now, they have stopped responding to my comments on the ticket.
I am pretty much a techno idiot. This is why the Mac was a good choice of computer for me. I would so love to play sl on my 20 inch wide screen again. Has anybody had these same issues? If so, has anyone found a solution?
