is there anyone around you?

if your in a voice enabled area, the "Near Me" will have the little voice icon right by it. If not, your not in a voice enabled area. You'll have to either go to one and get near people that are talking, or start a private call with someone or a group.

Its not some system wide voice chat channel everyone hears.

Do you have any external programs that utilize the microphone? I don't know if they fixed it in any of the version after the initial Voice Beta, but every time I had Skype open while in VB voice didn't work in SL. It's like Skype stole the microphone from SL and wouldn't share it or something.

Anyway, if you do and they are open; close them and relog in SL.

I was in AHERN (voice enabled region) and many people was talking (I know it for sure), but "active speakers" panel shown me nobody... I don't know why...

I have the Griffin Imic with usb connection (it's an interface in wich I can plug my microphone) and it works well with other application...

Look for either a Voice Mentor or Voice-Aholics…there are usually plenty standing around at Ahern. They should be able to help you out. One quick thought. Do you have Push to Talk enabled? Make sure the Talk button at the bottom right of your screen is highlighted.
Good luck

Yes, but...this is not the point. When everything works well, you can see a small white icon-ball on the head of your avatar and of the other talking avatars (the icon becomes green when you talk). Instead I see no icons, no active speakers in the panel and then I can't hear anybody talking...

This is totally inexplicable phenomenon...

did you try standing in a few areas around there? the center of the welcome area there is the hub of 4 different regions joining, and walking around you can cross regions easy and voice gets messed up sometimes. I usually have to get where i am going, go in and disable voice for a minute, then re-enable it, and wait a few seconds, and it starts working.

Also remember something on your computer or firewall could be blocking it, as the voice program runs separately from SL.

Other than that, not sure why it wouldn't enable correctly. have you tried a private call just for testing?

Sorry to revive a half-month old thread, but I'm curious about Voice on Mac.

I was trying to help someone enable voice recently, and they had a similar experience to that posted above. Voice was enabled (talk button active), but no white dot - meaning voice wasn't successfully enabled. My guess is that it was firewall-related. Unfortunately, this person was using OS 9. While I own a Mac... I'm not a Mac "User" myself, the Mac runs a newer OS, and it isn't used for SL.

Basically, I'd like to see posts from First Look/Voice users who have experienced problems getting voice running on their Macs.... and what steps were required to make it work. Your examples will be very helpful as more Mac users come over to Voice SL.

Some examples would be:
--How to disable a standard Mac firewall
--How to check that voice apps are running (similar to Win task manager?)
--How to configure mic/audio source -- USB mics

OS9 cannot run SL, it requires OSX 10.3.9 or later.

to disable the OSX firewall you open your system preferences, then go to the sharing icon. Click on the Firewall tab, and it will say if its on or off with a start or stop button.

if you want something like Win Task Manager (though much better), you need to run an app called Activity Monitor in your Applications-> Utilities folder.

Configuring USB Mics can be tricky, and depends on the Mic. You can set the source in the normal Sound icon in System preferences, or if oyu want a little more control you can use "Audio MIDI Setup.app" in the Utilities folder. There youll be able to adjust what is default input and output and the USB mic input volume on pretty much any USB Mic. Remeber if someone is changing around their default inputs and outputs while SL is running, to restart SL with the defaults already set right. Using the options in the SL preferences doesnt work right, you need to leave them on default only.

Also make sure you aren't experiencing the dreaded 401 Unauthorized. To the person that suggested a quick short list of troubleshooting techniques- Bless you :)

i have the same problem

I am running os 10.3.9 on a g4 laptop and sl works fine .....except for voice. Even though I have enabled all of the voice settings etc., I don't get any active voice buttons or see people available to talk to...EVER. The voice settings come up showing a default mic and speakers ( I have a mic built into my lap screen) but it never ever works. I hope someone can shed some light on this.

Thanks!

I couldn't get voice to work yesterday, and I've never had a problem before. I haven't tried today yet.
