Constantly getting booted off

I am running OX 10.4.8 on a Intel Duo iMac. I have tried the latest First Look Viewer as well we the latest stable version of SL. And I always have the same problem...

After about 10-15 minutes of being online, my avatar stops being able to move in SL. I can look around, but I can no longer chat, teleport, or really do anything. I have essentially been disconnected from what I can tell.

The only remedy is to quit the application and re-open it. When I do that OSX tells the program has crashed and asks me if I would like to try again. Although it appears the program did shut down quite smoothly.

I have been watching the two small indicators on the top right of the viewer when I have been online. Often the one on the left is red, which I think means packet loss?

I am on high-speed cable line (Time-Warner). i have a router and opened up ports 443, 12035, 12043, and 13000-13050.

Any ideas?! I'm going crazy. Has been doing this ever since I started using SL over a month ago.

Much appreciated.

hmm.
I run on a Mac Mini. If *I* can run SL, YOU can run SL!

Which iMac? Later this 'may' be important, but for now, do this:

1. empty cache. (its in ~Library/Application Helpers/SecondLife/) drag it to trash.
2. in SL prefs, in NETWORK tab, reduce the speed throttle. Try to get it down to where the 2nd from right thermometer is never red. (well, Almost Never Red. ;)
3. in DRAW distance in SL Prefs (GRAPHICS tab, set it to 64)

start SL.
If you've done these, or it doesn't help, come back.

I have a 2 Ghz Intel Core Duo with 2 GB of RAM. This is not a slow machine. Frankly, I don't think it is my computer. I think it is the network.

On a hunch, I tried connecting my computer directly to the cable modem (ie not use a router) and it seems to be fine. Therefore I can safely say it is the router (Linksys SPA 2102)

As I mentioned in my previous post, I forwarded a few ports. What else might I need to do the router to make it work?

You opened those ports on the router for BOTH UDP and TCP, right?

No, not both. I had followed the suggestion in that article. Some are TCP and others are UDP.

443/TCP
12035/UDP
12036/UDP
12043/TCP
13000-13050/UDP

I'm having the same problem on a 2ghz core 2 duo imac. I bypassed my linksys and connected direct to my cable modem with no improvement. This is a recent development, it used to run fine, although I found the router (when i used it) would crash frequently and need a reset.

As it is now, the client stalls and the bandwith indicator drops to 0. Sometimes it picks up again after a minute, other time it won't. I can't tell which is the cause and which is the effect, but I'm starting to suspect ISP issues rather than client issues.

It might not have to do with your mac. Trying teleporting to another region with less traffic and prims (homes are good place if you or a friend have one). See if you can stay connected longer. It seems that mac's tend to be more senitive to a region with alot of "garbage in it".

What i mean is sometimes a region might be getting weighed down with traffic and junk (prims, partlce effects, bling, etc) and such that the regions needs to be restarted. From what ive noticed is people on macs tend be more sensitive to this and have trouble staying connected in these regions before anyone else. The landowner restarting the region can fix this. However, good luck convincing a land owner they need to restart a region cause you cant stay connected. Just something you might wanna try

Same problem - mac constantly getting booted
04-05-2007 23:31
This is an issue which should be fixed by the programmers... if so many mac users are getting booted off, something is wrong with the software, it's not the users/builders' faults. :-)

Maybe it's only the core duos?

Mac problems
04-07-2007 23:45
No its not the core duo. I have G4 e-mac and am having problems. I put it down to the easter increased activity as my download speed is much slower than usual. I have sorted some things out, but am stuck in one boring place. each time I try to transport, I get booted off.

getting booted off

I tried an experiment yesterday. I downloaded SL onto a Windows laptop (Centro duo processor, 1GB RAM) to see if it worked better than my trusty e-mac. It didn't. I got exactly the same problems I was getting with my e-mac. So don't blame your machine, the problems are at the SL site. they acknowledged problems with transportation today, maybe they'll sort it out, or maybe being Easter holidays there was just a bigger load. I can only ghuess. jemima

It's interesting that some routers have a problem with ports while others work just fine.
I have an Apple Airport Extreme Wireless Basestation an it worked right out of the box (no configure changes from the default settings). It appears Linksys routers have issues. Does anyone have a list of routers/wireless base stations that work and those that don't.

i had the same problem with another linksys router (wrt54g) a few months back that went away when i changed routers. based off that and your post i'd say that linksys routers are just worthless POS and that you should buy a new non linksys router

I had this EXACT same problem with my firewall at home. it's a Netgear FVS318. I was getting really upset about it. I opened up the SL port to my machine. Never had a problem again. I was connected for 24 hours the other day.

Can you please tell me exactly what port(s) you opened up?

Thanks.

Sterling, you might want to review the thread. you and I have already had this conversation. I was hoping Ricky had some additional insight.

:o Oops, Sorry, Marc!
You're right, I jumped to the last comment and didn't read the whole thread.

RICKY LUCERO:
Exactly WHICH port(s) did you open up to SL?
