Here's an orphaned article on the SL wiki that might help. I haven't looked very hard to see if this has been posted elsewhere on the wiki.
http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Help:Mac_OS_X_%28technical_issues%29 (For some reason this article is in the help section for the wiki, rather than somewhere it can be found.) |

I turn trees off in the debug menus.
(ctrl-alt-D to show 'em) In fact, this time last year when I was "born" I was on a pre-intel macmini, and I had to turn clouds & trees off, and keep everything turned down real lowwwww. Oh, and in primmy areas, turning anisotrophic filtering *on* works better. Sometimes. |

Mac sl Dual core

If you could make SL running on half the core, it would probably run better than on a fully operational dual core config. there is a patch for pc to fix the issue, for mac there may be a patch. Then again, on a macbook pro (intell dual) the engine seems to do the trick for me, without patch. this is a most educated guess, and might be wrong. |

I havent seen this happen on OSX. Alos the iMac G5 only has 1 core so its nothing to do with it. |
