No sound

For the past few days I have not had any sound from the SL client on my month-old iMac G5. I've restarted and rebooted many times. I think it started about the time of last Wednesday's client update but I hadn't used it for a few days before that so it could be something else. Other sounds from other programs work OK.

I also use SL on an iBook and the sounds are fine there as always. It's just the iMac where they're not working, which is too bad as it is a much faster machine.

Anyone else seen this? Thanks!

To follow up, I have discovered that actually my problem is the same as the one in this thread:

/164/ca/82854/1.html

that is, I do in fact get sounds from in-game movies. Those are the only sounds that work. All other music and sound effects are completely silent.

I wonder if maybe movie sounds are played by a helper program, maybe something Quicktime related? If so that might explain it, since every other program is able to make sounds just fine, only SL can't.

Since two people have reported this problem, there might be the potential for more players having trouble in the future. I hope the SL developers will look into whether there is anything odd they are doing with sounds, that their program would work differently than everything else.

It's a sad feeling to play the game this way. It's like being deaf. Luckily everyone talks in sign language :)

It may recover whne you tweak any setting in preference. I've also experienced it recovers just when I open the preference pannel.
