I *just* joined SL, installed v1.12.0.15. Tried opening the app, and immediately get an "unexpected quit" error.
Tried Repairing Permissions. SL still quits.
Tried Restarting. SL still quits.
Any ideas?? I can't even open the application to try out SL. Phooey...

Wow. I think I just figured it out.
I had created a folder, and put the SL application, along with the text file and html file inside of it. When I tried opening SL from within that folder, it would not work.
However, when I moved SL out into the Applications folder by itself, it opened up right away. WEIRD!

Mac OS must have Applications in the Applications folder in order to work correctly AND expects to find them there when updates/patches are required ! This applies to all apps not just SL. Hope this helps out

Right now i have a few apps, even fresh ones i downloaded for testing.... and even SL, running just fine outside of my Applictions directory. Even testing them running right out of the root.

Very true. Only apps which are coded poorly, including some of Apple's, would have a dependency on them being in the Applications folder to run properly, or anywhere for that matter. There are reasons why they should be in there, such as some other features of the OS not recognizing applications that are applications unless they are in the Applications folder, but that is certainly not a good reason. It's very poor design, IMO., especially since other apps/features aren't limited by that (e.g. System Profiler). (Edited to add that for the record, my Second Life folder is a few levels deep in a tree outside of the Applications folder - and the only serious issue I've run into has been the freezing.) I've successfully run SL directly from my desktop, a USB key (great for testing at the Apple Store), etc. However, some apps break under different conditions. If it's not running from a certain location, the first thing to suspect: are there any spaces in the path name? That is, do any of the enclosing folders have a space in their name? If so, that would be the first thing I tried to address.
And, no, apps shouldn't break like this. But they do.
