I'm trying to find the best solution to my SL graphics bottleneck: Early 2008 Mac Pro double quadcore Intel Xeon 3.2 GHz processors and ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT, 256 MB. Yeah, that's the problem! I went for default graphics, since my purchase was pre-SL. (I run Folding@Home 24/7, so I need processing power). I am running OS 10.6.2 stabily with no issues. Just a very slow rezz.
(1) I know I can upgrade to ATI Radeon HD 4870 (512 MB) because my Mac Pro, early 2008, meets the min. spec required for RAM, i.e. 800 MHz, ECC, DDR2. ANY ISSUES HERE, e.g. Snow Leopard??
(2) However, I'd rather upgrade to ATI Radeon HD 4790 (1 GB), --I can get it on eBay for ~250.00--BUT I can't find what my Mac Pro RAM requirement is. For example, Mac Pro 2009 runs on 1066 MHz memory. So I need to find out if the Radeon HD supports 800 MHz RAM. If it does, I'll buy this. If it doesn't I'm forced to buy #1. I cannot find this one piece of information on the net (apple.com doesn't even sell the 1 gig card).
Any other advice?
