The only really good way to do this is to have another Mac and to have both connect through a good router.

Is there a way to run multiple avs on a Mac?
12-19-2005 14:41
On a windows based system all you have to do is right click on the SL desktop icon and add -multiple in the target section under the properties tab. My second computer is a Mac and I haven't been able to figure it out. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Right click or control click on the SecondLife icon and choose 'Show Package Contents'
Browse from there to Contents -> Resources
Look for a file called 'arguments.txt'. If it does not exist, create it.
Inside this file add any command line arguments you want, these are the same ones that work for the PC.

-multiple is the argument that allows multiple accounts to run on one machine simultaneously

A list of command line arguments is in the LSL wiki, at http://secondlife.com/badgeo/wakka.php?wakka=newview

It's a guess, but how about creating another copy of the program file? Maybe rename it too.

Here's a bit I dug up and posted to the wiki on setting command line options on a mac.

Normally I run my alt on another machine, but I thought I'd give this a go..

Make sure both apps are running in Windowed mode or you might have trouble switching between them. And dual monitors certainly help too.

This worked for me...

Duplicate "SecondLife.app" to "SecondLife copy.app" ( I just left the default name here )

open SecondLife.app/Contents/Resources
open SecondLife copy.app/Contents/Resources

Create a file called arguments.txt in both of the "Resources" folders

These arguments seem to work on the Mac. ...

In SecondLife.app/Contents/Resources/arguments.txt

-multiple
-purge
-noprobe
-port 13000
-login firstname secondname password

In SecondLife copy.app/Contents/Resources/arguments.txt

-multiple
-purge
-noprobe
-port 13001
-login altfirstname altsecondname altpassword

where "firstname secondname password" and "altfirstname altsecondname altpassword" are obviously the names and pswds of your main AV and your alt.

Tried this when a friend visited a few nights back. Set up my account as one instance, and set up a second instance for his, following the above instructions for an alt. It worked great, even on my Mac Mini! Not much slower than SL usually is, really. Thanks! Now we can both be on when he visits me in RL, or when I visit him in RL.

I just tried this but had no luck :(

Where does the resources folder live? I only have the program in my applications folder with no subfolders. Is this in user/library...? or somewhere else?

/me is puzzled

Applications in OSX are actually just a hierarchical folder structure with .app and an actual executable in a folder inside it.

You can dig inside these by right/control clicking on them and choosing "Show Package Contents" which will reveal a folder called "Contents" in finder, you can drill down from there. It's a pretty slick system really.

I did this, but I still got the message that I am already running SL on my MAC. Is there something I am missing?

Gone,
See Post #8.
Did you do EACH step exactly as described?

Then open SECONDLIFE.app and SECONDLIFE COPY.App ?

And don't forget to use different Avitars.

Alternate Method
12-14-2006 01:26
1) Open up the Terminal program (in your Applications>Utilities folder).

2) Type or paste the following into the window:
/Applications/Second\ Life.app/Contents/MacOS/Second\ Life -multiple

3) Enjoy!

I have that session saved, so that any time I open my Terminal, it issues that command and automatically fires up SL.

Happy alting.

Fast user switching is the answer here.

make another user account on your mac, fire up sl on one.
fast user switch to your new user account and fire up sl on that one too, don't forget to log in with your alt.

this will run slow but it works.
