Crashing all the time. Runs 1/2 as fast as the Windows version... on the same hardware. (I.e. if you reboot in windows, SL runs 2x faster.)
WTF LL???????????????? I send bug reports, post message here, and NEVER a response!

That's exactly what I'm doing -- running it on Windows.
But that's NOT an acceptable work-around!
LL NEEDS TO FIX THE MAC CLIENT, PERIOD

Can someone clarify this. Are you saying that SL will run on an intel Mac using Windows withot the constant crashing?

Is this better done with Bootcamp or Parallels? Also what configuration of Mac and OS is this working under? Thanks.

Maybe more IMPORTANTLY...

Is there anyone working on an open-cource SL client for the mac?
Seems like it may be up to the mac community to fix the problems, since LL isn't apparently moving forward to do it FOR us.

Think Different?

I was a chronic crasher but -still using the same Mac - the only time I now crash is when I empty an overloaded trash file.
These are the changes I made along the way that kept adding to stability - besides keeping the draw distance down and accepting that "ripple water" has to wait for the next Mac.
I gave SL it's own "user" account.
Before launching SL, go to library/Application Support/Second Life/ and drag the cache to the trash and empty it. Yes, takes longer for SL to load. I also noticed that if I don't trash the cache - I get that extreme hard drive rev everyone notes.
Since the inventory has to reload, keeping inventory as compact as possible matters. Keeping it compact also seems to speed everything up when I TP. Yeah - I hate "doing inventory" - but I hate crashing more. I also never seem to lose inventory. Don't know if it's connected.
After sorting that out, I switched from DSL to cable. Same price - but the difference in rez time is dramatic.
This is all empirical and could have nothing to do with anything - but, well - I don't crash.

i always feel sorry for all the people screaming how they crash left and right on the Mac client and it needs to be fixed, I'm just happy I'm not one of them... been running mostly the Mac Client well over a year through updates and everything and its been rare I've had any problem.

Mac and SL--What is going on?
08-26-2007 19:30
There is a real problem here...and I wish someone would pay attention in SL...or just say, "don't use Mac."
Despite some success stories I read here, I cannot now even use my iMAC at all. Every time I log in, I am frozen, even when I use Bootcamp and use Windows. When I use my old PC, not a problem at all. Can someone tell me what is going on?
I have a good high speed connection, iMAC with all the good hardware..what is left to do?
This is truly an unbelievable situation. My iMAC works fine in all other contexts. Why not with SL?

From: Gistya Eusebio When when when have you contact or filed a ticket to see that they say. Some mac users IF they are really running. Have very high end macs and don`t understand what the problem is really. Contact LLAbs and place a ticket in the support portal and wish for them to answer.

no problem here

I run SL on my iMac (1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo, is that the same as yours?) and also on my MacBook Pro. Both rarely crash, except when there is obvious grid issues. Of course, the MacBook Pro is the better machine & runs SL quite a bit faster than the iMac, but the iMac runs good enough, I wouldn't really notice the difference, if I didn't have the two systems to compare side by side. One suggestion I'd say is - get more RAM. I recently got more RAM for both my systems and SL performs even better now on each, very smooth - I can even use the 512 draw distance now! If I'd been crashing before, like you experience, I'd suspect the performance difference from more RAM would put an end to that... really makes a difference, try that if that doesn't work, maybe time to hit the mac store again

This is really interesting, it seems some macs perform better than others. I have over two years old iMac with 768 RAM and 64 Mb graphics card and OSX 10.3.9, I do have lot of lag especially in crowded places, I do crash occasionally (especially when emptying the trash), but usually my SL runs just ok. Not excellent, but ok. Oh, and I am on ADSL, with 1 Gb connection, so that too is pretty slow for SL. I just wonder if it is all about the server where someone's avatar('s inventory) is stored? I assume there are several of those. I thought my situation is bad, but after reading this thread, I think I can be happy how well SL runs for me it seems.
