What Software to Record Movies?

Hi Mac People! :D

So I was thinking it might be fun to do like all the cool kids are doing, and make a short film in SL.

The movie function built into the client is less than optimal, even when I do get it to even work at all. So I went looking for something like Fraps (which appears to be windoze only) and I'm not having much luck finding a good alternative.

One of the mac geeks in the office suggested I try SnapZ by Ambrosia... problem being, I go to their website and it appears this program is not compatible with my intel-based mac. :(

Can anyone suggest a good program for recording the SL window?

Thanks!

If you chop down the window size you should be able to get a reasonable result with the built-in recording tool... you won't get any sound though.

I'm surprised Ambrosia hasn't updated snapz pro yet.. they're usually good about that.

Haven't used it but this may be a decent alternative:

Ordinal, I can't seem to make a recording at all. After I stop the recording my documents drop down shows the video file, but it's nowhere to be found. It's as if Windows recognizes the file was created, but the file remains nonexistent.

What might I be missing?

Thanks flash! That looks promising. :)

I'll also give a try to the in-client movie.

Thanks! :D

I can't get it to work in Windows at all either... it works okay on the Mac version, but it doesn't seem to save anything in the Windows version.

That's the second time today I've seen someone saying the exact same thing - I might post something in SL Answers about it.

Using the SL movie function seems to work fine for me, I can capture quite large format movies. I especially like that the debug menu allows you to turn off the user interface while taking shots. I have toyed with iMovie a bit but am not very proficient at its use yet.

I seem to get a long lag at the beginnning of each SL movie where there is a lenghty still shot before any animation starts.

bugs in recording?
08-29-2006 01:50
until July, i recorded fine with the built-in mac software. on an Intel imac. always went for the highest fps setting, result still a bit jerky but not too bad. then i used imovie for post production. Used the window size unchanged. for the output, used share-expertmode-broadbandhigh or lan/internet compression. huge difference to the cd-rom quality.

Since one of the recent sl upgrades, i have problems. Every movie i record now has a big, about 10% black stripe on top and on the right. since imovie doesn't allow cropping, as far as i know, i can no longer capture video on the mac. which sucks.

anybody similar experience, any work-arounds?

thank you
Susi

PS: my most recent movie (july when it still all worked) is here:

This happened to me. It seemed to be related to the user interface scaling; if I reset the user interface to 100% the black bars disappeared. I bug reported this a few weeks back (#385584) but I haven't heard anything back so far.
