LL Removing Mac Support?

Well..I've been in second life for a while now and made a few friends who get to hear some of the scuttlebutt flying around in SL, sometimes. One thing that made my ears perk up was that LL are apparently removing support for Mac.

Why!?

Well they found that, when coding the WL versions for Linux they only had to make some very minor changes to get it to run on a Mac also.

'So!' said they. 'We might as well remove mac support!'

Well now, this is a silly idea, isn't it!? For one thing there's twice as many Mac users who need the support than there are Linux users and, to be fair, I can't see this changing within the next three to five years. Mac technologies are beginning to pick up popularity while linux really is still in a state where a few people are converting to it to 'see what it's like'.

Bad idea to remove mac support!?

Macs are outselling PC's in the US market .. I can't see this happening.

I have never heard anything credible to support this, and it would seem very bizarre indeed considering the number of Lindens who use Macs (let alone residents).

LOL... according to whom? Macs have always maintained approximately 5% of the market.

They are running at a lot more than 5% ("14 per cent of the US retail computer market last month - 25 per cent if you look at its share in terms of sales revenue" - http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/03/19/apple_us_retail_sales_feb/ ) but still not 50%. Which is good; I would have to find some other snobbery mechanism.

Windows based PC sales are on the decline as less people are buying new computers, meanwhile Mac sales have remained steady.

14% of the US retail market was a very good number to hit for a month. They aren't outselling Windows PC, just they had more growth, percentage wise. actually much more growth compared to a very stagnant market.

LLab would do almost anything. But take Mac support off would be foolish. No the source who said it has no idea what they are talking about.

Well the USA is nothte only users on sl, in japan Apple has its place but its % is so low less then 30% But then again many have more then one computer here.

less than 30% in japan? yeah I'd think so... Apple would die if they ever got close to that high anywhere in the world :-P

worldwide i think they barely have like 4%. Their sales are only decently high in the US, where the market-share is about double what it is if you add the entire globe into it.

This is most likely just some stupid rumor started by someone who thinks they had a good idea, so decided to say they "heard" it from somewhere.... someone who knows little to nothing about Macs. Or someone who just wanted to get some Mac users riled up.

Why people make issues about MAC and Windows is silly. I don`t know about you But I have been a user of both OS for a very long time. I can careless about what is nerds and geeks "as they say" feeling about the subject................ All i care about is how much ability i have with either system. I was a old apple II+ system user then mac mac+ etc etc etc. To those people that say "DAH its those people LLAB is no longer bla bla rumors" are the just too stupid to understand there will always be a Apple support.

Remeber there is a generation that growup with Apple and moved on to Windows because work situations caused such to occure. In my real Life I am interior design. I learned both on a mac and then later windows, and IF people understand the business world companies like people that can use both. SAy either is better over the other is just plain silly and narrow thinking. If i am given the option to chose between the two systems in work i would use both....Why? Because they both can complete task the others can`t. Oh have you forgotten what abut thoat the dislike both windows and Mac?..................

I am no expert, but a user for many many years............of both systems.

"Mac market share jumped just under a half percent in November to 7.3 percent—3.28 and .02 percent for PPC Macs and Intel Macs, respectively. It was the second biggest gain for Mac market share since the transition, the largest being .55 percent at the end of January last year. If the numbers next month follow that trend, it's just barely possible that the Mac platform could break 8 percent. At any rate, sometime in 2008, Mac market share—and by what we mean growth, not installed base—will exceed 10 percent."
