Any word on the iMac/Core 2 Duos?

I don't suppose any residents are such Mac-fanatics that they already have one of the new Intel Core2 iMacs? They use ATI Radeon X1600s for video. It'd be nice to know if these machines don't have the annoying texture-cycling and lockup problems that plague so many of us Mac users.

The low-end iMac has the Intel GMA 950 integrated video. Not too good for SL!

The 24" iMac has a 7300GT, but can be replaced with the 7600GT if you bto from Apple Store.

iMac 24"
09-26-2006 00:26
I've just got my 24" inch iMac with 2GB Ram and the 256 Nvidia 7600 graphics card.
SL looks fantastic - well it would compared to my Quicksilver G4 with 32MB graphics card that is over five years old.
But my new machine keeps crashing whenever I play SL. It gets kernal panics - something I've not experienced on the G4 at all - not since the days of OS X 10.1.
So something is seriously wrong somewhere.

Seriously, the new core 2 duo imacs cannot play SL at all - at least mine can't. When I say it crashes, I mean it. One or two minutes in world max, and the screen disintgrates and the machine gets kernal panic.

Today I downloaded the client to a store machine — one of the 24 inchers. I tooled around for a few minutes, with no kernel panic! But when I tried to drop into window-mode the application crashed and burned.

On the one hand we have kernel panics — Apple's problem, which Apple will not fix, and on the other an unstable application which LL doesn't seem to love very much on this platform.

People are complaining about the current update for intel macs in other threads. Is it possible that this is an SL client problem, not a mac problem?

I am assuming that earlier clients ran fine on Intel macs. Does the current update run well on older intels but not on new ones? or are older intel macs experienceing the same issues with this update.

No probs so far for PPC;)

Crashing with 24"
10-04-2006 05:31
I have the duo core intel 24" with NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 128.
The textures flicking and cycling and after a weird screen that go to Kernel Panic black screen.
An I must use button to restart!!

(But when that works SL is superb... fluid and I can see nice Waves)

I have the 17" Core 2 Duo with 2 gigs of ram. It uses the ATI X1600 and runs great. No crashes, looks great etc.

Just to add to the fray

I stopped by the RL Apple Store the other day and downloaded SL onto a new 24" iMac. It did the texture-cycling thing. I had that problem on my G5, and fixed it by swapping out a bad graphics card for a new (better) one. I didn't know at the time that it was more common on new iMacs.

I was just about to order a new iMac, but thought I'd stop here first to see what was up. Not looking good.

On the other hand, my son just went off to college with a Mac Pro w/ 2 dual-core Xeons and the ATI Radeon X1900 XT with 512MB video. Wow - SL on that works and works well.

Based on this small sample discussion, the problem reporters mention NVIDIA GeForce and the no-problem reporters mention ATI. Hmmm?

The most successful software company in the world does a piss-poor job on all these points. Particularly the first three. Why do you expect Linden Labs to do any better?

hardware failure
10-06-2006 03:23
Thought I should mention on here that my hardware has now failed completely (one week old 24" iMac) - and this cannot possibly be an SL related issue. I think I just got a dud, which can happen. The machine at present will not boot, not even from the install CD.
So there may not be a general problem with these machines playing SL.

Mine is going back to Apple. The replacement has already shipped, but it is still in China as of writing. If I have problems on the replacement machine, then that will be interesting.

Im here to say my iMAc 24" duo 2 core with 2 GB ram and gForce 7600 GT graphics card works a DREAM. Have had it 3 days now, been playing SL alot, Even paformed a DJ session useing iTunes and Nicecast. Excellent top specs paformance and NO crashes as yet.
Only gripe is everynow and the SL freezes as if to catch its breath, yu feel like the whole machine might suddenly die, but all comes back a second or two later and its on with the fun.....

Remember i have the 7600 not the 7300

Im in SL heaven....

I currently own a 15" G4 Powerbook, and I'm considering getting a 20" Core 2 Duo. How would you compare the two? Is it worth it, just for SL?

new 24" works a dream
10-14-2006 13:58
I've now got my replacement for dud hardware - a 24" iMac which kinda completely died on me after 5 days. Gave me hell trying to play SL, crashing and all sorts. Eventually refused to boot even from an install CD.
The replacement works wonderfully. Had it three days, not one crash. Not one. And everything is turned up max. No workarounds or compromises. Really fast an an absolute joy. Thank goodness. (Touches wood).
