Texture problems

Hi everybody,
just recently after a long break due to a car accident I downloaded the latest SL viewer, logged in and screamed.

The problem is that after a few seconds all the textures get messed up, sometimes I see peoples skin textures on my floor, the tree texture on walls, shoe textures on peoples faces etc etc. So in short, all the textures are in the wrong places. Occasionally I can enjoy 5 minutes of "normal" playing where everything is fine and then suddenly again it all gets messed up again. This is a very, very annoying problem as it makes the game pretty much unplayable unless you're into Picasso.

Has anybody else seen this problem and maybe even been able to resolve it? I have sent bug reports to Lindens but no reply so far.

I've tried disconnecting all my peripherals, changing screen resolution, using another audio card (hey ya never know ...) etc etc.

My setup is a

Dual G5 2GHz
1.5GB RAM
2x S-ATA Drives with each 160GB
Geforce 5200 Ultra (64MB)
M-Audio Delta Audiophile
Pioneer DVR-A05 DVD/CD Writer
Apple 20" Cinema Display

Thanks in advance.

try rebooting

Have you rebooted and re-logged in?

One day I was wondering why all the grass in my sim had been retextured to look like the bottom of an ocean. I was about to complain on the forum and ask why it was changed and then I decided to reboot. Back to normal.

I've noticed on mac that sometimes if I've just run photoshop or another graphics card hog, that SL doesn't function properly or runs too slow. Reboot and things are better.

Worth a try...

ok.. i just re-read your post and you would have had to reboot to try some of that stuff. I would try lowering the values in Adv. Graphics:

Object detail - middle or lower (more to left)
Tree detail - "
Avatar detail - I have mine set higher but...

Try with and without Avitar vertex program.
lower your max particle count to 2560
maybe lower the outfit composite limit to 2 to 4
draw distance 128 or less.

What's your video card memory set to? It does sound like a problem in video card memory where textures would be stored. What's the texture cache size set to?

I have had the problem but only once.

My grass - at my place in SL - newer look the same - its always a surprise what it will be...

My brother that helps me - (after checking up SL) with the technical things putted in a fast graphic card.. ( 256MB ) and then a lot more memory than the standard version of my G5 Mac.

Strange things happens sometimes but I am sure its more SL than my Mac...

Interesting. I have almost your exact same config, only with a VGA LCD display.

I believe the problem here is corrupted data in your VRAM. I've seen those sorts of things happen to me occasionally, and I blame the paltry 64 MB of VRAM that we're stuck with in our 5200's.

That said, most times, I can run Photoshop, After Effects, Safari and Second Life all at reasonable performance simultaneously without having this graphics glitch show up.

Try running Software Update (Apple menu) and making sure you have the very newest available revision of OS X installed. If you've got outdated drivers that are causing this problem, running Software Update has a good chance of fixing that.

Another thought: How much free disk space is available on your startup volume? Since the system swap file and the SL cache file both reside on the same volume, and because both can become pretty big, make sure you have at least 10 GB free.

Finally, delete your SL cache folder and see what happens. It's in:

I get this quite a lot unless I turn off vertex switching, then it mostly goes away. It's great when people's clothes start switching around while I am talking to them :)
