CPU usage

The latest client takes my CPU usage to 100% or close to it. I suspect the same thing is happening to yours and then the machine is overheating. Use the Activity Monitor program to see what is going on, and file a bug report.

Mac Power down in SL after a few minutes

Second Life is a CPU hog. As you stated you made an upgrade change. If you upgraded the CPU, it could be that the processor is heating up to a point that it is shutting down to protect the CPU. You can test this by running the CPU process monitor in the Utility folder and see the CPU usage. Listen to your fans, do they come on or go into high mode before shutting down. If you have a heat sink on the processor is it on correctly. Check vents for dust or debris. Also there is a nice utility called iPulse that gives everything you want to know about your computer's performance including the internal temperature of the CPU (if it has that feature enabled). The utility can be found at http://iconfactory.com/software/ipulse/ (they have a try before you buy download). Watch the temp. mine peaks at 135 degree F before the fans kick into high. I have a G4 Powerbook and found that a small personal fan blowing on the bottom of the laptop (at the CPU, memory area) drops the temp down 20 degrees. I have no idea why SL is such a CPU processing hog, hopefully they will fix this issue in coming upgrades. If you system is still under warranty you may want to consider bring it in to check the cooling system is functioning correctly or at the very least talk to a genius about the problem. If you do a google search on "cooling fans iMac G5" you'll see a lot of mods.
