I love my imac.. really love it. However I fried my logic board about a month and a half ago and teh genius bar people installed a new power supply and board at their expense. WHen the weather started heating up and my computer area was sustaining ambient temps in the mid 80s (with 70 plus relative humidity) the thing starts going to sleep automatically and then comes back up after 5 seconds. I aim a high powered fan at it and it keeps me online or running smaller progs but even skype sent it into slumber a few times. I get maybe 5-15 minutes of play time in either SL or Garageband before it starts the sleep thing. So I bought an air conditioner and it was 77 degrees and 60 humidity and I still only got about 15 minutes of play in SL!! Now its been in the mid 80s up here in the northeast for weeks but I am still worried after only getting SL to run for 15 minutes at 77. So my long winded point/question here is have any of you had the same awful luck of owning a first gen imac g5 and have been completely screwed over because of heating issues? If so how did you fix the prob? Did you get a fix from a mac store or did you have to takeout speakers and install new fans? I need help on this badly.. I cant record and do my music thang at all (and at a time where it is fairly critical for me to be doing so) and whats almost worse is it has seriously destroyed my time in SL the last month when I was looking forward to arranging and setting up gigs (which I would be doing by now if this wasnt happening). Anyways Im seriously depressed and I cant quite find an answer to my sollutions on forums elsewhere... mostly Id like to know if anyone has fixed this problem with relative ease or had it fixed for them by mac. I'd also like to know if you think it is wholly the heat and once things chill down to 74 or so Ill be alright to stay in SL for hours on end again If you have suggestions to please be specific as I am a total dolt Thanks for reading.

From: Missy Malaprop that is not standard operation, there is something physically wrong with the iMac if its overheating that much Yeah I know.. not standard at all but common enough with the first gen of imac g5s that Ive found lost of posts about it on the net. I bought a portable air conditioner and have the comp just above its outflow an dthat is working. I am still dismayed though, I tried running SL without the AC on it last night as it was only about 72 degrees in the house.. and it started doing the sleep thing again. So Im taking it back into the genius bar next week an dexplain to them that this is quite literally ruining my life because I cant do my live music thing in SL or work with Garageband or any other very large software. Im hoping that they either replace the whole comp (id be willing to pay up to 500 for a newer imac that wont do this if they'll take this one as trade)... sigh.. we'll see. Hehe "diaper girl"! woot! thanks for responding though I appreciate it

Hey Missy

Well Ive done some asking around with owners of the same generation of iMacs. Almost all of them suffered or are suffering these effects. Whats more is that once they seem to slip into a lot of this overheating sleep/shut off mode the comps become more sensitive to heat. So that now some of us who could run at about 80 degrees ambient temp can only run at about 75 or less now! lmao! I havent heard of any complaints on the very next upgrade of the machine ( I think it was when they started putting in the iSight standard). Ive been putting off taking it in because I know they have been bombarded with this same issue, but Im going to be offline for about a week soon.. so then is the time. I'll let you know what they do for me if anything In the meantime we should get our freaky ass selves together in world and go bowling sometime! LOL! or shopping

1.8ghz imac G5 2 gigs ram 64mb nvidia card 250 gig HD 20 inch screen Exact same set up only 17 inch. They replaced my logic board and power supply back in June but the issue back then was a fried board not overheating which I'd figure would have been fixed with the replacement power supply. I had no overheat issues until the big heat wave started to kick in. As I said now it wont handle SL longer than 15-30 minutes without the AC blowing right on it even at ambient 72 degrees. Im taking it in after I talk with the help line and the "genius bar" tomorrow if I have no other recourse.
