I just got my Macbook Pro. It has a 100 GB 7200 rpm drive and 256 MB video card. I am upgrading to two gigs of RAM. What is the ideal setting for the display for SL purposes. I either end up elongated or slightly squat . I also would like to know what preference settings seem to work well for other people.

I find it much better for distorsion to just run in a window, even if taking up the whole screen.... other than that start allt he settings low and scale up as you like it. i like detailed items and avatars and always leave those sliders max all the way up, but i leave the draw distance down to 64 meters. (unless flying around exploring)

I have exactly the same specs as you, and my prefs are set up pretty much the same as Missy...everythng maxed out except draw distance. I've reduced tree detail (cause I don't care too much about looking at trees) but I'm not sure it's made a significant difference, and the fps is good anyway.

What do you mean by good FPS?

My configuration is:
Macbook Pro, 15.4" Dual Core 2.0ghz 512M of ram Stock hard drive (I think it's an 80g) Radeon X1600 w/ 128M And the performance i'm getting is horrible! I think the most I've hit is something like 18 frames per second. Slowdowns all the time, weird behaviour (suddenly I start sinking into the road, down into god knows where). I've been trying to tweak the graphic settings but quite franckly it doesn't make a hell of a lot of difference. Any ideas what the problem might be? My network connection is 3meg DSL |

Neonskimmer: the obvious suggestion is that you do not have enough Ram. The consensus seems to be that you need 768 megs or more, though I haven't heard that from Linden sources. I'm sure you are *only* running sl, that you've repaired permissions and that your draw distance is down to 64 metres....

What Dani said. 512 is really not enough RAM. Also, you only have 128 megs of Video RAM while the OP has 256. I'm also confused because in your first post you said you have everything maxed out, that might be the problem.

the truth is overrated ![]() The most successful software company in the world does a piss-poor job on all these points. Particularly the first three. Why do you expect Linden Labs to do any better? ![]() |

I agree too. I took my macbook pro 1.83 and ran it with 512, and I could barely even turn within the game without the fps dropping to maybe 1 frame every few seconds. I upgraded to 1GB, and bingo, smooth like skippy peanut butter.

Slowdowns all the time, weird behaviour (suddenly I start sinking into the road, down into god knows where). I've been trying to tweak the graphic settings but quite franckly it doesn't make a hell of a lot of difference. Those symptoms on SL with your computer config, is usually always some type of latency, ecspecially the sinking into the ground. Just because your ISP says its "3mb DSL" doesnt mean its running that great You may also just not have your settings good enough. Start low and work up. |

2 gig is sweet... except...

With 1G it was OK, but occasionallly jerky. With 2G it's sweet with all the settings maxed except aniso... except it doesn't let me select avatar vertex program.

If you want to use full screen mode with a MacBook Pro, you'll need to type in a custom aspect ratio, as the screen ratio of 16:10 isn't in the list, and SL automatically detects 1.3333 (4:3) if you let it. Enter 1.6 as the aspect ratio and you won't be tall or squat any longer. Same applies to the MacBook, though with the integrated graphics, you won't be moving very quickly. |
