Geesh, what a mess. My desktop blew up, so while I wait for a new desktop (Apple is apparently getting ready for a refresh, and a huge backlog) I'm on my laptop, a G4 Ibook. I really only use it for travel, Lazy Boy websurfing/emailing and power outtages. (We have lots..I'm in the midwest.)

I was happy with what it did using Tiger. Now I wish I had Panther because I can't get onto SL at all. I *can* use Ajax Life...it's back up, but I can't pay my rent boxes. I've IMed my landlords, but in a panic because I can't pay my rents. I *can* pay Lindens directly when they come online, so I'm sure all will be fine. (Ajax Life does chat and you can pay somebody, but there's no way to pay a rent box.)

I really thought I'd be able to use my rescued hard drive as a second drive and reboot using that, then log on long enough to pay my rents. But for some reason, even though my old hard drive (Panther) is mounted, when I try changing that to the startup disk and restarting, it just hangs. If I could get that to work, would be a solution until I'm back online for good.

I've searched and searched, and can't find a copy of an old version of the SL software.

Does anyone have any other ideas? It's looking like it may be another week or two before I get a new computer.

Thanks, Nic

Second Life should run under 10.4.11 or later. If your version of Tiger is 10.4.10 or earlier, use Software Update to bring it up to 10.4.11.

What is the failure mode when you try to run SL?

Have you tried the old versions at http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Old_versions

Am I getting Panther and Tiger mixed up???

My desktop had 10.4.11 and ran SL fine. Laptop has 10.3.9 and won't run it.

To quote Charles Barkley: "I'm a dumba$$."

I'll go check out those versions now...thank you!

Well, I almost got there...I downloaded 1.19.0.4 and it opened. I tried to log in, but it said you must download an updated version...or quit.

I think the answer is no, there's no way to run SL on 10.3.9. :(

Yes, there is.

Viewers up through 1.19.4 should run under Panther (10.3), you just need to set it to tell the SL server you're using something else. (I thought newer ones up to 1.21.6 would, but I may be wrong on that).

Right click on the SL icon, and select "Show package contents". Open the contents folder, then the resources folder, then open the file "arguments.txt".

Of its own line, add this:

--channel "Panther"

Save the file and run SL. That should bypass the mandatory upgrade message.

Milla, that worked! Woot!!! Thank you. Now my rents are paid and at least I've got a way to get onto SL during the next power outtage. Winter is coming, which means ice storms. (I've really got to look into a generator.)

Fantastic!
