I can't get voice to work on my mac pro runing core 2 Duo 2.33 with 2G mem. When I start SL before login to server the mic seems to work in the preferences voice device settings, but once I login to the SL server the device setting input level just says "Please wait". Is anyone else having this problem? I tried opening the firewall with no luck. Maybe the next release will fix?
Anyone have voice on their mac working?

Voice works on my iMac. I have a Logitech headset/mic, just a cheap one, USB connection. I use voice in the regular client, as well as Windlight.
I wonder if you could start voice.exe before starting SL and see if that works?

Well, I was able to *listen* to Voice with my December 2007 Mac Pro, at a recent meeting. Audio quality sucked. One person was too loud. Another so soft I could barely hear them even if I stood right beside them... Didn't try a headset or Mike, as I refuse to talk on SL using Voice. 95 % of the meeting dropped back to text within minutes, as it was the only reliable communication. My old Mac Mini was completely incapable of using Voice. I nefer could hear an intelligible sound with it, and it had no sound-in option other than a USB headset, which I wasn't about to pay for.

Voice has been working great on my Macbook Pro (original release) since Voice was in First Look client.... still works great.
I have found problems with changing inputs and outputs in SL, but as long as i leave SL set to defaults, and just change the default inputs and outputs in System Preferences, it works.

It seems to me that the issue isn't whether or not voice works, it's if SL likes separate input and output channels. Everyone using a headset has no issues. Those using a separate mic and headphones or speakers seem to be the ones that sometimes have issues getting the mic working, and I've seen this myself in the past.
What I do when I'm recording in-world voice is run it through Ubercaster, setting the input device as Ubercaster out, the output device as Ubercaster in, and the it works fine with the external mic. But for just direct use, I have to use the headset or it doesn't want to work.
Unfortunately I'd say either try a headset or run your mic and headphones through some software that can act as the input and ouput device to SL.
However, voice in general in SL has become pretty seamless in my experience. I use it all the time, mainly for private conversations as we zoom all over the grid exploring or finding places to podcast about. The whole voice aversion thing really mystifies me. Sometimes I think people just want something to be mad at. It's 2008. Get a usb headset. Use voice when appropriate. Don't go around being angry that a lot of people DO find voice useful in the right situations.
Now granted, sometimes it's not appropriate. We had Max Kleene on Blakslee at the Lonely Yak Roadhouse awhile ago, and as it was running Havok 4, Razzap cranked the limit up to 100 avatars, and there were 100 avs present at one point. It got wonky, as you'd expect, and one guy kept bitching in voice about it being wonky. No shit, sherlock, 100 avatars were in one building. So I turned voice off for the parcel and shut him up.

why would you have to wait for a new release? It should work fine, might find a way...
I don't think you need the same input and output like a previous poster said. I tested using headset mic and built in speakers... built in mic and headset speakers... built in mic and built in speakers... it doesn't care. Just make sure you just change your default settings in OSX, not try to set the input and output in SL.
