I'm posting this with the intention of showing how random these Mac issues are for people. I have a very typical stock MacBook Pro (2.4GHz, 2GB RAM, GeForce 8600GT card, 10.5.2 OS).
Yesterday, I got into world at 2:45 SLT and stayed continuously, TPing around to like 10 different places, did an hour-long performance of live music, went to a packed sim for another artist's performance, went to a friend's party in yet another packed sim, changed clothes a couple of times, did a bunch of normal stuff (multiple IM and chat windows open, etc.), and got out of world at 7:45.
Five straight hours... not a single beachball, not even a hiccup, much less a crash. In fact (knocking on wood here), I haven't had SL crash for over three months, possibly longer. I can't be alone in this, right? I haven't done ANY special setup of my Mac, and my preference settings in SL (draw distance, audio, whatever) are very typical.
Is it luck? Fate? I don't know. My old G4 would crash every 15 minutes at times, but I've been quite lucky with this machine, ever since I moved into Mac OS 10.5.2 with the graphics update. And that's all i wanted to say. Your mileage may vary... and probably will.

I wish I new what was different???

I have a mac with similar specs:
Macbook pro 10.5.2 4GB RAM 8600 256MB
I see that frustrating little beach ball all the time. It is practically unusable. If I could get 5 minutes without a stall, I would be thrilled!
Are your graphics set to the default?
If it is not much trouble, would you mind providing the details of your advanced graphics settings?
Thanks, Zig

I have a PowerMac tower (the silver one) PPC G5 dual 2.7ghz, one of the fastest of the last PPC G5's, I lag like crazy around other avatars, I don't seem to have a big problem around regular objects, buildings etc..., avatars lag the hell out of me, I crash hard and crash constantly, my guess is the newer Macs handle SL better with the Intel chips. I'll also guess that they compile SL on an Intel mac.

From: Zig Zweig Are your graphics set to the default? Mostly. I think I lowered my draw distance from the default to 96m, and turned off some of the advanced texture mapping and lighting stuff. From: someone If it is not much trouble, would you mind providing the details of your advanced graphics settings? I'll be in world later today and tell you exactly what they are. By the way: none of my good performance absolved Linden from fixing stuff that just doesn't work, or works sporadically, especially the asset server issues. But I just don't crash, almost ever, and almost never even get a beachball, so I guess I have little room to complain compared to most of my Mac brothers and sisters.

SL is STILL fracked up on this MBP
05-21-2008 20:10
After the Leopard Graphics Update a few months ago which at least allows SL to run for more than a few min without crashing, ever since, on both main & RC viewers, SL stalls with spinnning beachball ALL THE FRIGGEN TIME - for 5 to 60seconds, every few minutes.
SL works fine under native Windows XP on the exact same MBP.
Frankly I've just about had enough of this farce.
Are there any decent work-arounds for this issue? Is it a "known issue"? being worked on?
