Hi all - Anyone else having problems with the pre-intel Mac Mini's?
I got the one that was top of the range when it was released but it seems so laggy even when run in window mode. I have set the draw distance right down which has inproved things SLIGHTLY however, i still find that it runs LAOT smoother on my Vaio Laptop that has the lowest of low spec ATI onboard cards in it? is this a standard thing with Macs that unless you spend super £££'s on the upgrades then you get sub standard graphics capability?

The ATI 9200 in the original mac mini was marginal when released, and I was hoping for a refresh with a 9600 or go5200 after they released Tiger, since they were the minimum chipsets that supported Core Image.
Alas, instead they put a *less* capable chip in the Intel minis, and use the dual core to make up for the performance loss. The non-pro Macbooks and the new sub-$1000 iMac have the same problem.
And you can't upgrade any of them.
So, basically, you may have the best "low end" Mac for SL *still*.
Faster 2d, yes, but far less 3d capability. I assume Intel twisted Steve's arm to use the Intel GMA950, because ATI makes a perfectly good integrated GPU they could have used instead.

I have the same Mac, and performance is terrible. I set up my 2-year-old PC with an old ATI 9000 (and I *hate* PCs) just to run SL and it's like playing a different game. Put an nVidia 7600GS in it and it's improved even more.
The Mac client is second-rate and your machine has a marginal video card that can't be replaced.
