GOOD NEWS for those of us who inhabit the apparent 1/4 of one percent of the Second Life User market by being people who still use our "ain't broke" Macs running OS 10.3.9 and who got screwed by last night's mandatory upgrade . . . On the advice of a friend I went to www.onrez.com and downloaded the OnRez viewer put out by Electric Sheep Inc. It works with 10.3.9 and looks and feels strangely "MAC-ish" from back in the days when OS X first came out and the first IBooks and IMacs. Some of the terminology is different (Inventory is "Stuff" and the controls are organized a tad differently, but I took to it right away. The graphics are much cleaner than they were in SL Viewer 1.19.4. I am running an iBook G4 that is pre-intel, so I am hoping that this solution works for those of you out there who are like me and don't see the necessity to replace something that works fine in all other respects. I also found Electric Sheep's website easy to navigate and with instructions and directions that were very accessible. That is more than I can say for Second Life!

I spent many frustrated hours yesterday trying to log on after SL FORCED ME TO UPGRADE! Major drag...... Thank you very much Caledonia for posting this fix! Please come to my gig tonight at Heron Island @ 6..... I was sweating yesterday that I would be locked out of SL and unable to play it!
Poor musicians like myself can't just go out and buy a new computer though I realize I have to upgrade soon.... and changing the OS on my old G4 is way more trouble than it's worth, especially as it streams and runs my music software very well, do a lot of playing and recording w this old machine!

I'm glad it's working for you as well.... I nearly feel out of my chair when I saw it worked. Let's thank OnRez for being for us all in our time of need.

apparently having problems with my audio stream, which I'm told was skipping last night while I performed at HIPS?!?
Not sure if onrez would my affect my audio.... which is streamed by Nicecast... didn't think one would affect the other, but now I'm pissed off, dazed and confused, to say the least....
this forced upgrade has been quite a PITA for me!

WARNING: If you read the OnRez release notes, they say NOTHING about having applied the security patches, so you're still vulnerable if you use the OnRez cleint.

Boy Lane's builds are for Windows. Hyang Zhao does do Cool Viewer builds for Mac, try http://hyangreflections.blogspot.com/ if curious. I believe these may be getting built on 10.5 Intel boxes. PPC running is spotty (the latest seems OK). I would be surprised if they can run on Panther at all but it can't hurt to try.

Thanks Viktoria. I edited out the reference to Boy Lane's versions of Cool Viewer when I realized they were Windows only. Must have been while you were typing your reply.

Does anyone know anything about a workaround to get a viewer that works on a PPC 10.3.9 box WITH the security patch?
Despite what some people claimed, I am unable to upgrade to 10.4 on that box so that is not an option. Ignoring the fact that 10.4 wants more resources, there is the fact that I rely on some programs that the manufacturers never ported to higher OS versions for who-knows-why.

Boy Lane's Cool Viewer 1.19.0.5 runs on PPC Macs. http://my.opera.com/boylane/blog/cool-viewer-1-19-0-5-for-macOops, I see the Universal Binary version that was there a couple days ago has been replaced with an Intel version. Try http://hyangreflections.blogspot.com/ for a PPC port.

Please read this: /164/66/288587/1.htmlI'm only playing around with the Mac versions. The latest I built for Intel only; to try to reduce the archive size. But Hyang is doing this already. Guess I will give the PPC version another shot. Stay tuned. Boy
