Hey there,
I' ve been trying to login on my iBook G4 (14" with SuperDrive version, bought 27th of april), but every time it holds and then tells me the server is down.
I have sent some crash reports after having to "Force Quit" Second Life, but I don' t think it' s much use, though... It keeps stopping at the login process...
Is there any known issue which might look like this one? If there is a fix for it, please tell me about it...
Thanks alot,
Kash (Ret Gretzky)

One thing to try is clearing out SL from your computer entirely and downloading a new copy. (Yes, this is extreme and there are other measures to possibly try, like clearing the cache, etc., so you might want to look for those first.)
Delete the app Delete the following from your home directory: * "Library/Application Support/Second Life" folder * "Library/Preferences/com.secondlife.indra.viewer.plist" preference file
Now go to the SL website and download the latest viewer and give it a try.
* This is the NUKE IT ALL option. I may have had to do this once, when an install got borked. HTH & Good Luck. *
Major point: nothing of importance is stored on your local system -- all your user info & items are on LL's servers.

You've got only 512MB RAM -- that's pretty minimal for SL. It ought to work, but I found it worked much better with 1.25 MB on my G4 PowerBook than when I had only 768 MB on that machine. Be sure you shut down or at least minimize all other applications before you try to run SL, and if possible add more RAM. You'll be glad you did.
Cheers, Kat

I definitely improved when I bumped my PowerBook G4 1.33 17" from 1 GB to 1.5 GB -- much less virtual memory use, so no stalls going to disk anymore (mostly). But I don't think this would keep Ret from being able to log in at all.

Cheers, Kat I run SL on a Mac Mini with 256MB 1.42GHz daily. Beats the hell out of the HD, slow as hell. But it works. 512MB in a QuickSilver 2002 800MHz is quite a bit faster. 768MB seems to make no difference on either of my 512MB G4s. I'd suggest 1GB or higher. Max it out if you can.

Thanks for the rather useless advice... that' s all machine-based...
I can' t login due to Network connection issues... And there' s nothing I can do about that network connection at all...
I was on holiday in Germany for five days, got everything set up and connected a LAN-DSL that goes directly to the network, well... that worked like magic...
I get back, plug in my LAN and there we go again, slow, useless crappy internet... I have to type this on a Win because my Mac takes too long to load, due to the internet...
I need advice as to how I can boost my internet, by doing what, where and when...
That' s the only salvation for the SL-on-a-Mac issues I have here...
My Mac' s system works fine, fast and lags zero (compared to my Win)...
Thanks again for your time...
Kash (Ret Gretzky)
EDIT: The only pretty useful advice here was from Seraph, telling me to erase it all...
But then, not thinking about that this is the first install and that I have cleaned my system entirely twice, so far already...
This time I think it' s going to stay the way it is... Since everything worked from the first try...
Everything, except for SecondLife... >->

well it was useful to me!!!

I'm glad I stumbled on to this thread as I needed the information Seraph graciously handed out. (a particular someone may not have found it useful but I sure did!) I thank Seraph profusely!! I had had a full weekend of no SL on my imac and was upset at why I could not stay logged into SL on the imac. I had uninstalled the app but not the other two files. After reading this thread, deleting those files and reinstalling, the issue was resolved! I am very happy and relieved it took only a short amount of time searching the forums for one possible solution that did indeed solve my small issue. Again thank you Seraph... some people may not be that perceptive to when someone is being nice, but you've at least helped one person. I will pay it forward <3 rylee <3

Problem solved
05-15-2006 12:59
The main issue was solved by these installations:
- Windows XP ServicePack 2 update - Windows firewall adaption to SL for PC (ran in LAN network, and not used on the PC itself) - New LAN cable Cat-6 - Automatic settings for the iBook, copied in a home location, now using all the installation data, except for the PPPoE and on DHCP to the PC - No proxies whatsoever on the client-side (SL and other apps) - Custom ports in the Macintosh Firewall (SL ports) - Internet connection sharing on the PC
I can successfully log on to the SecondLife server, play the game, and my internet speed has gone faster with immerse amounts...
All thanks to the help of an Apple Center assistant...
Either way, thanks for nothing guys... Hope this helps anyone better than the previous help supported...

Are we supposed to be mind-readers? Do you realize that you've just insulted other Second Life *residents*? We don't work for Linden Lab, we pay to be here just like you and don't owe you anything. That's a pretty obnoxious attitude to have. You want to try to get a response from Linden Lab, try posting in Second Life Answers or sending email to support@secondlife.com. As for me, I'm certainly not going to bother with you anymore, given your attitude. Congratulations, as much as other posters may annoy me from time to time, you just made the first entry on my ignore list.

Wow, what a stunningly rude and uncalled for way to respond to people who tried very politely and thoroughly to help you with your problem. In case you don't realize it, the folks who responded here are *not* Lindens or official tech support in any way shape or form. They are simply fellow residents who altruistically took time to respond to your (not as clear as it might have been) post in an attempt to suggest ways you could help yourself. No one in this forum owes you a darn thing. Lose the entitlement and try getting some manners.

Well, don' t eat me for this...
I wasn' t even aware that it might even ever be Win XP...
I could connect to the internet without problems, just slow... so I thought it was something with SL or so...
So according to that, I didn' t get any advise on what it might be...
I wasn' t aware of anything to do with my host because of all this, and I was only asked for it in the shop...
I didn' t even intend to go back to this post because it didn' t solve anything, but then there was a reply, I might just have posted something to help others with the same issue out, too...
*shrugs* was just trying to add something to the list...
And if you want to ignore me and all, I can' t force you not to... I' m also a dedicated SL player and I don' t want to miss a part of the game, either...

What should I say now? "I' m sorry" or something? Didn' t mean for an insult whatsoever... appologies for that part, though...
I can' t help it either, because the help that was given has resolved nothing for me at all... I didn' t know about other issues until that one shop assistant asked me if I was routing trough Win XP...
I even stared at him surprised that it couldn' t be linked trough... even though it should have the full ability to do so...
I can' t know everything, but I try to do my best on learning...
Sorry to bother you with being stupid.
Kash...
PS: If you want to kill me, I' m online around 3 PM SLTime...

Kash, I honestly have to say I'm just baffled by the tone of your responses to this thread. Makes me wonder if perhaps we're running into some cultural or language differences or something? It's too bad that the advice the folks offered up here didn't ultimately solve your problem, and it's decent of you to post a follow-up on what happened in case others might be having the same problem you had. But "thanks for the rather useless advice" and "thanks for nothing" read as sarcastic, insulting and ungrateful phrases. Seems a strange way to respond to fellow residents who, successfully or not, took the time and the thought to attempt to help you, and did so completely of their own volition. As for the bizarre offer to track you down in-world and kill you...well, you definitely don't have to worry about any violence on my part. About all I'd be capable of doing is busting out some not terribly threatening kung fu anims from my inventory.

I don' t know where you guys live or what you' re used to reading or anything... But my main language is Dutch, for I was raised in Belgium...
I might not be able to read "thanks for nothing", or "thanks for the rather useless advise" as bad... because to me, it still means to thank you guys, but you couldn' t help... more or less like "thanks anyway", with a bad note attached to it...
Sorry if there were any misunderstandings... none of us can be perfect...
And about that killing me, that' s something we often say, too... It means that you can spit your anger at me any time on the game, or so...

Well, it turns out that since I was subscribed to the thread, I got the responses in my Inbox anyway. And I'm glad -- because it all turned out to be a misunderstanding between a native and a non-native speaker. Thanks for clearing that up, Ret. I'm going to go back and edit my previous post. [Actually, deleted, which I did since it asked for a reason & I expected it to post that reason as a replacement. *sigh*] And I'm really happy that my ignore list is empty once again -- I love Second Life and I generally find that the people here are wonderful and friendly.
But as a suggestion, definitely use the "thanks anyway" instead of the others. (It implies that you weren't helped, but you appreciate the attempt.)
*hugs*

Kash, thank you for clearing things up. I'm sorry to have jumped on you based on a misreading of your intent. It's just that those phrases have a very different meaning where I come from. Best of luck with both your Mac and with SL.
