Anybody know how well SL works, using the new Mac Mini with the 9400 chip? Wondering if it's a cheap way to achieve darned good SL performance on a Mac.

Mac Mini 2009

Just got a Mac Mini 2.0mhz 4G ram, 120G HD at 5400rpm. The Nvidia 9400M is a big jump in integrated graphics. SL assigned the machine to "medium" graphic settings, and I get between 15 and 22 fps in that setting. In low, I go as high as 35 fps, in "high" I go down between 12 and 15, and in Ultra it's between 7 and 10 most times. But very playable, things look good, controls are snappy, TP's happen fast . These settings were taken on a Saturday morning, and still there was not much lag.

Can anybody confirm whether this is a shared opinion? I am considering getting a mini as a semi-portable SL client for some research I am doing. If more people are happy about it I think I made my choice!

I bought a mac mini about 6 months ago and occasionally use it for running SL (about 2x per week). I just have 2Gb memory on it.

I use the mini as a media server, so it only has iTunes, FireFox, and a special application that decodes cable signals (and lots of media files sitting around on it) - so I suppose it runs well since there aren't any other background processes running.

I notice that it gets warm, like my MacBook Pro, so I also installed smcFanControl2 on it (http://conscius.de/~eidac/software/smcfancontrol2/index.html).

To get adequate performance I increase the video memory from 128 to 256 and then it is fine. It feels a little slower (just a little) than my MBP, but the juge display I have it hooked into helps me forget about that ;)

I have not tested streaming media over the wireless with SL running, but it would not surprise me if one or both become jittery.
