Hi there,

I would suggest taking a look at NiceCast http://www.rogueamoeba.com/nicecast/

There is a useful online manaul here - http://rogueamoeba.com/nicecast/manual/

If you are connecting to a external shoutcast server, just check the External Server tutorial on the online manual pages.

Hope that helps

I second Jamie's position on this. NiceCast does require registration to go beyond 20 min broadcast (after that it adds white noise on top of your feed, if you're not registered) and I believe the price is $40 but it's been worth every penny. It'll do shoutcast, icecast and even Live365 if you want, and it's purpose built for easy broadcasting.

There are a few F/OSS things out there that can also do the job, but none I've seen are as clean and usable as NiceCast.

I do not work for Rogue Amoeba, but have been a happy customer for over a year, and do regular live shows in second life.

How do you set up NiceCast to output a stream that works as a media stream for your land in SL? All I've been able to get it to produce is an M3U stream, and that doesn't appear to work as a stream in SL. My friends can open the URL to my NiceCast stream just fine in iTunes, but if I stick it in the media link, the Music play button that appears doesn't actually play the stream.

The SL knowledge base says I need to use a PLS stream, but I can't figure out how to get the latest NiceCast software to make one.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated, thanks!

Hi there,

If you are using the built-in nicecast server rather than sending the stream to a external shoutcast server to relay. Then normally the address would be based on your external ip address ( http://whatsmyipaddress.com/ will tell you if you don't know) and then the default port is 8000.

So if you external ip address was say 66.30.192.200 the address you would use is http://66.30.192.200:8000 in SL

If you saved the .m3u file and open an text editor, that should also have the address inside it.

If you use a firewall you would need to make sure that the port 8000 was set to forward traffic to your internal ip for the computer doing the broadcast. (this step is only needed if you are hosting the stream on your computer rather than sending the stream to an external server)

You might want to check this page too for some more details. http://rogueamoeba.com/nicecast/manual/English.lproj/help_server.html

Hope that helps.

Thanks, Jamie.

I've already dealt with the Firewall, and my friends can listen to my stream using iTunes, so I'm confident that it is streaming out.

I was using the Internet address from the 'Share' drawer, which is http://<my-ip-address>:8000/listen.m3u
and while it works fine with iTunes, it doesn't work with SecondLife's media stream from the land properties.

When I get home, I'll try leaving the listen.m3u part off of the URL and see if that helps.

A quick follow-up: removing the /listen.m3u part of the URL that Nicecast showed in its "Share" window did the trick. My friends were able to listen to my Nicecast stream through the SL client.

Thank you again, Jamie!

I played around with Nicecast for the first time yesterday, and got it to work (after running into the usual issues of firewall settings, port forwarding, and forgetting to remove the /listen.m3u).

Any recommendations on external stream servers, in case you happen to be somebody without the bandwidth to act as server to more than just a few listeners?

Great to hear you got it working Midori!

Ged, have a look at my store inworld. Nicecast is great that it will work happily with shoutcast or icecast external servers as well as a few other options.

Was there last night :) Now, if I had anything to actually broadcast, I'll know where to go. Thanks!
