Ncecast URL streaming won't work

Hi guys. I'm trying to get Nicecast to stream to my SL land.

I'm hijacking iTunes, and Nicecast is happily streaming and being picked up by RogueAmoeba test server. I have streaming ON in SL and I'm easily picking up other Shoutcast streams.

Nicecast presents the stream URL as this: http://60.242.26.93:8000/listen.m3u

I've also tried these variations:

http://60.242.26.93:8000
http://60.242.26.93:80

This is what I paste into the About Land music stream box. I get no sound at all. Now I read somewhere that SL does not accept mp3 'playlist files', and it appears this is one (ie it has the suffix 'm3u', without the quotes.

So, if this is what Nicecast presents as an internet URL, how does anyone get Nicecast streams to work at all? People always talk about Nicecast working and streaming live gigs, dj sets and everything. I tried also to stream another application (not iTunes) to see if Nicecast altered the URL syntax, but it didn't.

Thanks in advance for any help.

If you use a firewall you would need to make sure that the port 8000 was set to forward traffic to your internal ip for the computer doing the broadcast. (this step is only needed if you are hosting the stream on your computer rather than sending the stream to an external server)

I can connect to http://60.242.26.93:8000 however just hear static, so looks like you aren't streaming any music at the moment.

If you are going to be streaming to more than a few listeners you may want to look at renting an external shoutcast server to relay your stream to, then in nicecast you simply setup an external server and nicecast would stream to that server instead. Then you would just need to put the servers address on the land in SL.

I'm having the exact same problem. I can use Nicecast to broadcast to the internet via iTunes as a source. I checked it on QuickTime and some other players and the url stream was picked up just fine. The only thing that doesn't seem to be working is the SL media stream :(

So, if I'm not using a playlist, would I be able to have live artists use my Macstream url to broadcast into SL? That's my real goal anyway.

Streaming and listening from the same network won't work

Hi Keth,
Yeah, i got someone to pick up my stream, so it was working. But I couldn't hear in SL, even after deleting the 'listen.m3u', which is recommended.

With streams, if you are sending out from your network, you can't listen to back on the same network. You can't use the INTERNET url stream, only the LOCAL one.

Get a friend to listen on a DIFFERENT network.

The only way around this is to rebroadcast your stream to a THIRD PARTY streaming service, which will also provide more bandwidth and multiple users. Then you can listen in as well because the IP address won't be your own.

Nicecast presents the stream URL as this: http://60.242.26.93:8000/listen.m3u

If there no firewall problem, put this URL on the SL Streaming video (on the bottom) not the streaming audio.
