Heya. Drake Bacon, usually from the Linux side. I just got a new Mac mini, the one that was quietly updated on Tuesday (1.83 GHz Core 2 Duo, 1 gig ram, 80 gig HD, $600, Intel GMA 950 graphics w/64 Megs shared graphics ram). I ran System Update yesterday after I got it home and set it up, and it's up to 10.4.10 now.

Strangely enough, it works, although I believe full screen is right out (I crashed a few minutes in, but the grid being the way it is, it may just of been the faults they've been having). But I have my alt, Drake Winger, logged in and she's doing fine with a relatively small (I bet 800x600) screen, running about 10 fps on average with shiny and vertex shaders turned on, and nothing much else.

I guess I'm writing about this in the M2. First Intel GPU in Linux, now MacOS X...

I'm pretty sure people on the forum here have been running SL on Mac Minis for some time now, hopefully they will be able to share their experiences with you for an article.

I know King Phil is quoted as saying he'd like to see SL running on an OLPC some day- maybe putting some energy into properly supporting these internal graphics would be a start. Despite what technology snobs say, they are capable of running SL, much like bumble bees can fly :)

I wasn't surprised when the requirements were more of a safe platform for SL, something we've blown to bits over on the Linux platform. Just searching for Intel graphics in the Linux forum here will turn up the relevant thread.

I should check how large I can get the full screen display before things get pear-shaped.

I run SL on the original Mac Mini, with just 32 MB VRAM. I wouldn't recommend it, nor could I greatly recommend going with a system that has only 64 MB VRAM. My frame rate sucks, compared to most people I know. If I am going to get new hardware, I'd not accept less than 128 MB VRAM.

Will SL Run on the new Mac Minis? Yes. Is it sufficent 'bang for the buck'? I doubt it.
