well the Core Duo and Core 2 Duo chips are very close in performance normally. The Core 2 is slightly faster, though usually only noticed in benchmarks, not everyday use. The Core 2 has one great advantage over the Core 1 though, as it has 64bit extensions and can run 64bit OSes and software. This is little difference on OSX 10.4, but when 10.5 is out later this year itll have much more 64bit capabilities added in and the Core 2 might have much more noticible performance increase. It is also possible itll have a longer life if some newer software years from now is written as 64bit only, but by the time that happens the Macbook will most likely be outdated.

As for video, the Core Duo and Core 2 Duo Macbooks have the same video capabilities, the GMA950s... the Pro versions both have radeon x1600s. New Macbooks will soon have GMA3000s though which are much better, but intel just released the new chipset for that like a day ago, it might be a month or two before Apple has them in the Macbook.

now that intel released the new mobile chipset (aka Santa Rosa) the Macbooks and Mac Minis should sometime soon (depending on Apple) have them. They have some much better capabilities, mainly the GMA3000 video which is much improved over the GMA950.. it also does hardware T&L unlike the GMA950... which is the main holdback in the GMA950 not running many current games correctly. the 3000 is still slower, entry level type performance, but its not as crippled in features as the 950 is.

I would definitely wait on a Macbook (non-Pro) or a Mac Mini until Apple updates with the GMA3000s since it should be very soon to within the next couple of months.

GMA 3000 does not have hardware T&L, etc. It is similar in features to a GMA 950 with higher clockspeed.

GMA X3000 (and its mobile equivalent, the X3100) do support hardware T&L -- in theory. In reality, this feature will be disabled until a forthcoming software update from Intel in the 2nd-half of this year.

So I wouldn't hold my breath for a MacBook or Mac Mini with a 965 chipset and X3000/X3100 GPU and an Apple driver with hardware T&L enabled any time soon. And who knows what bugs/issues this new chipset / GPU / driver combination will have?

If one is willing to wait anyway, use the time to save more money for a laptop with a dedicated graphics card... which means a MacBook Pro or a non-Apple notebook.

while i didn't write X3000, i didn't really make the distinction since there is only the X3100 for the mobiles that will affect the Mac line, sometimes people dont need to be loaded down with the littlest tech details so I drop stuff, sorry if i was unclear. I just meant the 3000 familiy that will affect the Macbook. Yes the X3100 that will be in the Macbook and Mac mini eventually does support hardware T&L. Just because Intel hasnt written a Windows driver to support it yet does not mean there will not be one for OSX when its out... even intel should have the Windows one out soon. The hardware still supports it, so its still better to wait, and get a software update later, than not be able to do it ever without new hardware. Especially when it should only be a few months and most likely be the same exact price.

But yes, if you want good graphics buy a Macbook Pro... thats what I went with.... but of course i got it before the Macbook existed

Apple released the specs on the new MacBooks today. All they're adding is faster CPUs (the base model is now a 2GHz Core2 Duo, and the stepup ones are 2.16GHz) and bigger hard disks. No new platform.

The Mini hasn't been updated at all. It's still being offered with 1.66 and 1.83GHz Core Duo CPUs. I wouldn't be surprised to see a speed bump for them in the near future, however.

small speed bump in processors... I don't think it will affect releasing new models in a few months.
