After persistent crashes and non-peristent prefs between relogs I just looked at the log files and found the log complaining it could'nt open files. Checked the permissions on the the newly created folder in ~/Application support/Second Life to discover they were all read only.

It maybe worth checking the permssions on your system if you're experiening non-persistent prefs between log ins.
