How to Migrate Files to New Machine

Hi all.

I will be purchasing a new Mac to replace my 2 year old eMac sometime this spring and would like to know whether -- and if so, how -- to migrate the SL files from t he old machine to the new one.

I assume that all my avie's "stuff" resides on my hard drive, not on LL's machines (it's embarrassing to admit that I don't really know ;)) and that in order not to lose all this, it must travel to the new machine.

Plus, can anyone point me to the optimum Mac for running SL? I have been reading the posts about various hardware issues with some dismay; it would appear that the most expensive models don't necessarily perform better (unless I misunderstood, which is perfectly possible). I don't know how I am going to persuade my husband that we need a higher-performance computer "just to play a damn *game*!" (his words, not mine) but I'm certainly going to try!

Thanks in advance.

Nope. ALL of your SL stuff is kept at Linden Labs.
When you get your new mac, Download new software and Run it. Log in as normal.
You'll be fine.

I use a Mac Mini. It works great for everything but SL. Ror SL, the graphics are just too poor. I'd recommend an iMac. A Mac Pro would be wonderful, but its a LOT of money, and the current video cards arent' that much better.

If you can afford it, the iMac 24" gets good reviews from most folks. Get lots of RAM. (its cheaper to buy it and install it yourself. There's a little door underneath that makes it easy. :) )

Thanks so much. That's a great relief, knowing that I don't have to mess around with file transfer.

An iMac it is, I guess!

even if you need to move all your old stuff over, its really easy. When you go through the first boot on your new Mac, it'll prompt you about it and help you get stuff copied over.

If you do get an iMac, make sure you dont get the cheap one that uses the GMA950 video, thats the same as the mini and the macbook. Need to make sure you get one that has a real video card, with a Radeon or a Geforce.
