I'm currently running Tiger (10.4.11) on my Macbook. (2.16 Mhz dual processor, 2GB ram). I'm beginning to think it's time I upgraded to Leopard.
I see a lot of people who are having problems with SL on the Mac - is this something I would experience if I did upgrade?
TIA,
Dave

Tough to say. I've been running SL with Leopard since the fall, and everything has been pretty fine for me. In fact, SL has run better under Leopard than any other previous OS in my experience.
A lot of other folks haven't been so fortunate.

I am running the Macbook Pro one generation ahead of yours, and Leopard works well for me with SL.

Can't say for sure regarding the Macbook, but on my Mac Pro the latest version of Leopard works fine with SL. Just make sure you download the updates after installing, and then check *again* for updates to get a graphics card update that only can be installed after you have the latest version of Leopard...

SL 1.20 works just fine on my iMac with Leopard and all the latest Apple updates (like Ceeraq said, keep updating...)
Isn't this the strangest thread? People saying SL works....

I wish sl worked well on my macbook pro. Very frustrating.
Here are my specs:

GeForce 8600M GT:
Chipset Model: GeForce 8600M GT Type: Display Bus: PCIe PCIe Lane Width: x16 VRAM (Total): 512 MB Vendor: NVIDIA (0x10de) Device ID: 0x0407 Revision ID: 0x00a1 ROM Revision: 3212 Displays: Color LCD: Display Type: LCD Resolution: 1440 x 900 Depth: 32-bit Color Built-In: Yes Core Image: Hardware Accelerated Main Display: Yes Mirror: Off Online: Yes Quartz Extreme: Supported Display Connector: Status: No display connected
In sl I run mainly in a low graphics mode and have set back my video memory in the hardware options and I still get beachballs and complete machine lockups.

It run sabysmally for me and I followed the suggestions that have been given.

Runs fine on my MBP too (2.4GHz, GeForce 8600M GT card, 10.5.2 w/graphics update). I really don't know what to tell you folks with troubles. I'm not doing anything special at all. I haven't crashed SL in several months.

Going to upgrade this weekend. Will let you know how it goes. For anyone having problems, remember to fix preferences and run standard PM. In terminal type the following as root you:/Users/you root#periodic daily weekly monthly and you:/Users/you root# diskutil repairpermissions / Hope it helps someone.

Sorta works

After leopard and 10.5.2 update it works, but there is a slight lag when trying to move. Did the 10.5.3 update yesterday and it still persists. Nicholaz viewer is still rock solid, Windlight seems to be the problem. Will try playing around with some graphics settings to see if that helps.

Not necessarily OK with Leopard

Friend of mine bought an iMac 24" last week. Duo Core 2, 4 GB RAM. He has the same problem I have with Tiger 4.11, his streaming Audio and Video disappear, too. He may not have the other same problems I have, but he has that one.

Going up
06-01-2008 01:05
Well, my old MacBook died during the week, so I've had to take out a mortgage to replace it The new one will have Leopard on it - so watch this space to see how I get on. Get all the upgrades before trying SL is, I gather, the way to go (makes notes). And thanks for the advice, folks. Cheers.

From: Burning Lamourfou ... Nicholaz viewer is still rock solid, Windlight seems to be the problem. Will try playing around with some graphics settings to see if that helps. I just tried the "Nicholaz" viewer version of the 1.19.1(4) version of the viewer for a few simple tests. a) Even though it is a 1.19 I am still able to build above the 720 meter limit. b) I was able to log into my "last location" even though it was above 720 meter (3000 actually). The SL series of viewers just drops me off somewhere in open space. So I hope to try to spend some more time in this viewer. It takes a bit of link following to get to the mac version of the viewer, but I found mine at: http://radio-boomslang.shacknet.nu/%7Ebb/articles/nicholaz-edition-mac/The instructions for installing it were simple enough for me, but then some call me a geek, not quite sure it was a complement :-?.

Yay It's working
06-12-2008 19:00
After trying everything, I went to ~/Library/Application Support/Second Life and moved all the content from there to a folder on my desktop. Launched the new SL RC client and HURRAY. Seems like the preferences were messing up SL. I mean this is only like the 200 th RC client I have had to upgrade to in the last week or so, so no idea why stale prefs might affect a new client Your milleage may vary, but it's an easy try and worse case you just everything back if it doesn't work... MBP 2.16 intel duo, 2 gigs ram, Radeon X1600, OS 10.5.3.

Ive compiled the latest stable version, but it wont run when I compile it for deployment, but if I compile it for debug it loads fine. I had it running for a while, but then after a while it just started crashing over and over. Kept saying something about Packet Data has already been added. I cant compile the beta version because it they something about FSVolume, I forgot what it said exactly. The stable version runs alot better then the older version I was running, since It seems to lock up every now and then for a minute or two which really sucks. I need to figure out something, because this is going to drive me insane. hehe
