Hi all,
just wanted to post some info on the universal binary running on an Intel iMac.
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processorspeed: 2.33 GHz
Processors: 1
Total cores: 2
L2-cache x 2: 4 MB
Memory: 3 GB
Busspeed: 667 MHz
I got this 24" iMac about 2 weeks now and its a wonderful machine running fast and smooth. The iMac is replacing my G5 dual 2.5 mHz with 3.5 Meg ram and an x800 videocard.
Second Life was running very well on the G5 but this machine made a lot of noise. Now i run Second Life on the imac the following strange things are going on.
1. Running natively on the Intel:
Processor use: 90%
Fps: 21/35
Running Second Life and no major other apps, the Finder is not responding fast and Second Life gives all kind of hick ups./ Sometimes the whole machine freezes for 10+ seconds. On unfreeze i find my avatar a few meters in the direction i went. (obviously my machine keeps sending data to the server) A relog helps and all is smoothe again for about 10 minutes. Then this hickups start again.
2. Running natively on the Intel:
Processor use: 90%
Fps: 21/35
Running Second Life with in the background Trata Studio Pro (3D) and Photoshop the Finder is not responding fast and Second Life gives all kind of hick ups./ Sometimes the whole machine freezes for 10+ seconds. On unfreeze i find my avatar a few meters in the direction i went. (obviously my machine keeps sending data to the server) A relog helps and all is smoothe again for about 10 minutes. Then this hickups start again.
3. Running in the Rosetta box on the Intel:
Processor use: 104%
Fps: 7/10
Running Second Life with in the background Trata Studio Pro (3D) and Photoshop the Second Life, the Finder and all other applications are responding very fast and Second Life runs without any hick ups!
4. Running natively on the Intel but launching Photoshop and Strata Studio Pro first!
Processor use: 90%
Fps: 21/35
Yesterday i tested a few configurations and tried this one.
Second life runs very fast and the Finder and all other apps are responding snappy.
No hickups for about 30 minutes at all.
It looks like Second life has some kind of memory leaks. I'm not an expert but i think the Intel code in the Universal binary is not healthy.
Its very anoying when this freezes happen (sometimes every few seconds) when working on projects and building.
Please Lindens, i know there are a lot of Macs out there, some with Lindens. Run a few tests and optimize the code.
Cheers,
