Are you working on a really small screen or something? If you can't (or don't want to) make the main SL window big enough to get the search buttons out of the way, you can shrink the panels. In SL's preferences, under the General tab, you will see a slider called UI Size. Even scooting that down to .85 or .9 can make a huge difference.

I've had that problem since last December, but I suspect it is my ISP (AT&T DSL). I traveled this summer to 11 different states. Even in the motel with the crappiest wireless, I was able to teleport in SL, but not at home with AT&T DSL. They offered me a more expensive, supposedly faster version, but I still farther away from the Central Office than anyone else on my DSL line, so, apparently, it is my fault and problem. But, I'm not going to pay $600 for a commercial satellite dish again, like I did for 3 years where I lived before. There is no cable in my neighborhood, and the price is double. So, I just relog where I want to go. Intra-sim teleporting usually works.

I'm using:
an Intel MacBook Feb 2007, with
2 GB 667
2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
OS X 10.4.11
