Problem: I put on a new piece of clothing, create a new shirt, pants, whatever, and it shows as garbage, random textures, then changes to fully black with no colour or accents. If I 'edit appearance' of my avitar, the preview windows show as different garbage and do not show anything accurately. Does anyone else have this problem? I've identified it as being isolated to the mac platform, and has happened on every single non-intel mac I've worked on. My windows machine (and others) show no problems with this at all. In fact, if I wear clothes on my PC and then load up second life on my G5 mac, they show up fine. I can often even switch between the clothes I've done this with previously without trouble. I have had this problem for coming up on 4 months now. I'm getting fed up and I really don't know what to do about it. A key point: it does this even with new shirts, pants, or anything on my body that I just created. No textures loaded into them. Nothing. It does NOT do this for any objects attached to me or in the environment. Yes, I've tried clearing cache and all the typical things. I believe every machine I've tried this on has had an ATI graphics card, which is the only consistency I can find. It has been this way through at least 10 version upgrades of Second Life. Anyone else having this issue?

Those who are interested might like to know that my problem was solved since this latest update! 1.11.0 (9). There is one funny issue though.. If I put second life in windowed mode (which I always have) and put it on my 2nd monitor, the problem occurs again. If i put it back on my main display, even without quitting the program, it works perfectly in both edit appearance, changing clothes, etc. Hey you lindens! Maybe you'd like to know this?

Happens to me on both my PC & Mac
07-24-2006 14:37
From: Aphinity Perhaps Any thoughts? Please? Yep I often have wondered why this happens... though for me i have not found any solution other than relogging I run SL on my PC mainly but it's only bc the graphics card is much better. And i get like no lag. When i run it on my Powerbook the graphics card supports only 64mb and i turn it down to 32mb. It kinda helps. On my PC i have it set at 64mb and 128 is recommended but for some reason when its set to the higher setting both comps lag sooooo bad that i have to change it back. I sometimes notice the weird textures for myself and on other ppl. I seem to think that the graphic draw is screwing up somehow and there is just "too much" info on the screen so it pulls onto the avie... i dont know if that makes any sense but that's what i think happens so i just relog... and it takes me forever to log out (like a good 2 minz) for the app to close Its just good that it doesnt happen too often... if anyone else knows why this happens or if it just happens to you let me know cuz i thought it was just me. And no the extra update didnt solve this prob for me Oh well...

Avie Texture Fixes

From: Tristan Kitty i do still have that problem. Black skin and textures complete messed up. reinstalling, clearing of chache.. and adjusting the preferences as said didnt help. any new info on that topic ? O.o tristan I recently discovered a fix for this while reading the Linden Blog. GO TO: Client/Character/Rendering/Rebake Textures >then wait about a minute or two and you should see your avie normally now. If you dont see the client menu on the top of the screen press CNTRL+ALT+D and it will come up. That usually helps for me... if not i relog.

Avatar turns black and appearance mode doesn't work
10-20-2006 21:33
Aphinity Perhaps I beleive you have the exact same problem I was experiencing. If you have a Macintosh with dual monitors this is your problem. Basically it starts with the AV's clothes turning black or various textures being picked up from the surrounding area. Then the whole avatar turns black except hair and selected objects your're wearing. If you go into Appearance mode the avatar and all the avatar pictures would pick up random textures and would cycle though them. Appearance mode becomes unusable. I put in two bug reports to Linden about this ""All my clothers look black or quickly change random textures" has been received, and assigned an ID of [rt.lindenlab.com #435509]. " Linden finally acknowledge the problem and found a work around It's under Support: Known Issues URL: http://secondlife.com/support/known-issues.phpSL-19065: AV Texture Baking on mis-aligned Mac dual montiors results in black AVs! Setup: You need a Mac with a second display to repro this bug. - (Apple Menu) > System Preferences > Displays. - Click 'Arrangement'. - Drag the Secondary display (without the menu bar) on top of the Main display (with menu bar). - Uncheck 'Mirror Displays'. - Close System Preferences. - Log in to Second Life. - Move the SL viewer window to the Secondary display. - Right-click your Avatar > Appearance... * Observe: Your avatar is jet black with no features. The preview graphics in the Appearance window are also black. * Observation note: On previous versions the GL previews would be distorted/'spikey'. - Move the SL Viewer window to the Main display. * Observe: Your avatar is no longer jet black with no features. = Workaround: If you saved your appearance in this jet black with no features state, resave it on the Main display. I now run the SL in my main display and it's back to normal. Hope this helps

MaryJane: Read Skyye's Note on Rebake
10-23-2006 06:17
MJ: try REBAKING your image. Skyye, about 2 notes up in this thread describes it. To turn on your 'debug' mode, I think the PC equivalent is Ctrl+Alt+D. This will add two new MENUs at the top of your screen, "client" and "server".
Just follow Skyye's instrucs, this trick works for PC and Mac.

Re: My Avi & skin textures & cothes...
10-25-2006 13:26
I have a maxed Powerbook G4 and when I first joined SL I had no problems like this but gradually it got worse. At first rebaking worked but now when I rebake I see my clothes, but the quality of my avi is still deteriorating. I too have a dark-skinned avi and I don't think that is the sole problem as my friends with light skins experience the same thing. It got considerably worse with the recent influx of newbies as did general rezzing to the point where SL has become more chore than fun, and it isn't just on Apple/Macs. Many times someone tells me I have no eyes or I am undressed because too often I can't tell on my display. I CAN see that my avi is looking like garbage no matter how good my clothes are looking and I can't afford to shell out $2000.L for new skin every few weeks.

Waterflower - You're not alone
10-30-2006 12:46
Goddess of the sky (Waterflower), You're not alone. There are many people talking about problems with texture mapping and clothing in the "Linden Answers" forum. You may want to repost in that forum also. When you are inworld and having the problem creating a bug report with a snap shot to Linden may help also. The problem I had with my Avatar turning all black and Appearance mode inoper. was solve with the dual monitor workaround (putting SL in my main window and re-cloth) I did notice afterward I had no eyes. The solution I found was to purchase another set of eyes. For some reason just switching eyes corrected the problem. (It's always good to have another set eyes anyway . As for how your Av looks - well when I saw you, you look mighty fine to me. GB

10-31-2007 04:50
Hello all, i had this problem right up to now but after reading these posts was able to solve it, however, i do not have a mac, i have a home built windows based PC running dual monitors on a 512 meg, DDR2 ATI Radeon 1650 AGP pro card. switching primary monitors began the problem.switching back the monitors, and rebaking solved it. also, others in the game saw me as black as well. hope this helps!

That is a Mac problem i noticed when I was working on a friend's I-Mac. It isn't specific to clothing, I have had buildings also switch up textures on me as well. It's almost like the Mac side doesn't select the proper UUID for it's textures, it seems to pick one above or below the UUID list or something more random. Generally the Linden's don't spend as much time de-bugging the Mac client as the Windows side. And if your video card get's "black listed" in the compatability then there isn't really any help offered. I am back to my PC now but my video card unfortunately got listed on the unsupported list the Linden's compile. Check to see that your card didn't unfortunately get moved to the 'unrecommended' or 'untested' lists on the main site. Sad but if they decide that enough users aren't using a specific type of card they stop testing it for compatabilities.
What I had to do was install a patched video driver that was actually made by a hacker for my card that I found in a WOW string via Google. I am not recommending that you install cracked, hacked software, that's your own discression, but check to see if an updated driver is available for your card from the manufacturer first. Unfortunately mine didn't have an official update, but the home-made patch update did work quite flawlessley in SL as well as WOW, which I have never logged onto, but I assume they have a similar video engine.
