Hello,
I am a basic user who is currently evaluating the game.
Presently I am having difficulties teleporting anywhere but on the starter Island.
During the teleportation process, I am disconnected halfway through the loading bar. Unfortunately for me, this includes the majority of the zones I try to teleport to. The only ones I am able to reach are ones which take less than 5 seconds to load - indicating that perhaps there is a correlation between my ability to stay online and the complexity of the zone I am teleporting to?
I am using a G4 PowerMac with 1 GB of RAM. It is hardly the ideal platform I realize, but I'm willing to deal with poor performance for the time being.
I would appreciate any suggestions.
Thank you.

Hi, it sounds like the problem i was having.
A work around that worked for me was to alter my network settings.
In Mac OS go to the network prefs and in the configure drop down menu...
Change it to the 2nd option, DHCP with manual address. Then type in your IP address below.

I use a router with two Mac's online. Which IP address should I use? My ISP IP address or my LAN IP address?

I read your reply again after clearing my head. If I change to DHCP with manual address, Safari can not access the internet.......

I have attempted DHCP with manual address but I am still disconnecting to nearly every zone I teleport to. Being unable to experience 90% of the content of this game is frustrating to say the least. A severe issue like this should at least garner attention from Linden Labs and yet nearly a month has passed with absolutely no response. Do I assume correctly that the Mac market is of no concern to them?

I've had this problem recently. It was being caused by PeerGuardian on my Mac. Disabled PeerGuardian whilst using SL and tp's work fine 100% of the time.
Boeman Fhang, if you're using PeerGuardian, try disabling it to see if it fixes your problem.

Hi sorry for not replying sooner. The manual trick worked for me for about a week...then something changed and it went back to slow tp's and disconnects :/ A possible solution was posted on the jira yesterday, it uses the terminal and i haven't had chance to test it yet. here's a link to it, http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-972?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel&focusedCommentId=68125#action_68125

I've managed to finally rectify the problem.
I configured my network to use manual settings which included the input of DNS servers.
This did come at a cost however; surfing the web is general is much slower and overall network speed is hindered. At least I can now explore the rest of Second Life.
It would, of course, be nice if I had something better than a Dual 867 MHZ G4 to work with, but I'll take something over nothing.
My thanks to all the respondents in this thread.

My old G4 dual 1.25GHz was having real problems running SL until I moved up to a new MBP (2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo), and it's been pretty fine ever since. SL is just seriously processor intensive, and the lower your CPU, the worse it performs. Video card makes a big difference too.

Leopard may be the answer

I had all kinds of crashing recently on several versions of sl. Previously I've run sl with no problems except for a dumb preview release with memory leaks. However, running system 10.4.11 just didnt work anymore except on an older version of sl (available now on versiontracker). I switched my system to the new leopard 10.5 and its running fine. Except for an annoying grey out on the resell/giveaway button for objects I create.

Mac 10.5...Leopard
07-15-2008 16:45
I have an iMac that I purchased in November. It had been running SL wonderfully until May. Then, everything stopped working. It seems as though some data is not getting through. I cannot cross a sim border, whether teleporting, flying or walking. When I try any of those, I crash.
I am premium member and own land. I am unable to see land information. It all comes up blank. Also, my group list is sometimes empty. The graphics are still great and the speeds are good as long as I stay in the sim that I log into.
I have had a support ticket in with the Linden's since the beginning of May and have met with much frustration. There is still no resolution to my issue and now, they have stopped responding to my comments on the ticket.
I am pretty much a techno idiot. This is why the Mac was a good choice of computer for me. I would so love to play sl on my 20 inch wide screen again. Has anybody had these same issues? If so, has anyone found a solution?

Teleporting disconnects
08-08-2008 14:35
I for some reason am now getting disconnected when teleporting. Started about a month ago. What I've found is that if I going into my home directory with Finder, drill down to Library, Application Support, Secondlife and I remove all of its contents I am able to teleport one time. After that one time, its is very slow and about have way through the bar I get disconnected. If I remove the directory again I can then TP once when I log back in.
Any thoughts? Thanks. Oh, Intel iMac with 10.5.4

It's your ISP - maybe

I used to have this problem (disconnects on teleports) all the time. I thought it was SL at fault. But then I upgraded my ISP account to the top-notch option designed for gamers, with low ping and latency (or something like that) and the problems were gone. The option I'm on now gives my account priority traffic. It costs a bit more, of course.

Teleport and many other issues on Mac are a known bug
08-25-2008 04:25
For those of you who are getting logouts on TP, are unable to cross borders, can't upload files, can't access About Land properties, have problems changing sound streams when you change parcels - the answer is......... you probly have a 2Wire modem. It's a known bug that's been extensively reported in Jira since November 07. The good news is that there's a rumour that the next version of the viewer - the 1.21 series - should contain a fix, given that LL have finally purchased themselves a 2Wire modem and can now reproduce the issue that over 250 people have been continually been reporting. Hope this helps Shai

As I said before, I can go straight to a PC, plug it into the same network cable my MacBook Pro is plugged into and connect and run just fine... Its the SL client that is the only verifiable point of failure here for me as I can verify my network is fine and operating with other (PC) clients and this problem is occurring on multiple Macs on my network. Perhaps LL needs to buy a couple of Macs now that they have a 2Wire modem.

The fix for me
08-30-2008 15:35
I was able to solve 100% of my teleport disconnects by manually setting the DNS servers in Network preferences. If you are using DHCP and your router is acting as the DNS server, the router is too SLOW to forward your DNS request to the DNS server then relay the result back to your machine. I am fairly certain that this is in fact an issue with the Mac network API since I didn't see anyone having this problem on the Windows forum (I could be wrong).
Do the following:
Get the DNS server information from your router or do what I do and use OpenDNS: opendns.org.
Go to System Preferences->Network->Ethernet->Advanced->DNS
REMOVE the router from the list, ADD the DNS servers that you obtained from step 1.
Click OK and Apply.
Enjoy SecondLife.
I should also add that this fixed region crossing as well. I can fly and walk across regions with no problems now.
