Spaces are important
------------------------------
I'm confused. What is this PC stuff doing in a Mac thread? You're going to have some poor soul tearing their hair out.
As indicated above, on the Mac its easy peasy. Just make a second copy of the client on yr harddrive. I have a secondlife folder with two subfolders, one called "main", one called "alternate". Each contains a copy of the client. I drag each client to the dock, so I have two icons next to each other. I can then click on either, or both. It works fine.
Just one word of warning. It seems that each time you swap between them, the client abandons the old cache, and starts a new one. The abandoned cache files build up. If each is 1GB, this can get out of hand, without you understanding where the space is being consumed. You must delete them now and again. Don't worry which you delete. delete everything in the cache folder. It just makes a new one. I even think SL may run faster for a while.
You will find the cache folder here:
your_home_folder/library/application support/secondlife/cache
Delete everything in that folder "cache". Everything. Don't worry, it works for me. Under Panther and Tiger. Of course, if there is something different about your machine, it might all self-destruct or something. But hey, to live is to take risk. You were warned.
I have had two alts running side by side on one screen, no problem. Useless for me though - my computer is too slow. If yours is fast, and you want the second monitor thing, that should work.
If your computer supports it, and not just in mirror mode, it should be easy. Just plug it in. Set it up in preferences so they are in side-by-side configuration. Get the two SL's running. Then just drag one out of the main display and onto the monitor. Size 'em, tweak 'em. Bingo.
Nothing ".exe" even remotely involved.

Oh - one thing more. When there is a patch, you can either download it from the website, and replace your two copies by hand.
Alternatively, you can let "auto-update" do its thing. You will find it has over-written whichever copy was running at the time. Dont forget to write the new version over the other copy. Unless you want to download it again !
