...like you care :D

Actually what I think would be really cool would be a multi government experiment. Start with a handful of sims each designated as a different form of governement. One for democratic socialists, one for unfettered capitalism, one for facism, one for monarchy...etc etc.

While they would all start out the same, I think it would be fun to see how they would eventually turn out as they matured. How would the builds differ? How would the cultures differ?

Maybe dangle this idea in front of the Lindens? Just food for thought.

Definately a cozy, stable autocracy in Gray, where I rule with the flaming talon of justice! And winghugs for all.

this would be fascinating -- put up multiple forms of government and let them compete for resources -- the primary resource here being "members" and people's time/products/services. Even more relevant might be competition for donated tiers, but I don't think that would fly.

Given that everything here is voluntary, including participation within SL itself, movement between the systems or exit from the entire experiment would be expected. Because of the combination of member mobility (the voluntary factor) and the lack of living necessities with SL (food, shelter, money, clothes -- all that is optional but not necessary), it would be tough to extrapolate results from SL to RL, but it would be fascinating nonetheless

fascinating ... but hard to see this happening because of the SIM/tier costs

I would predict results similar to Nationstates.

Actually, that is the long-term goal of the second phase of the Nberg project. :)

We hope to start with a single private sim utilizing our newly created government and add sims from there. (The governments in each sim will be limited to those that are not inherently repressive, though.) We then would unite and link the individual sims with a larger council (what powers and role it would have I as of yet do not know).

Great time for a political science forum, I say. :D

And so it was written...

From: Ben Linden

Bengo 5:21 I can get thee to worship your lord Ben in a Theocracy! My words of random meaning shalt for thine government be interpreted by Aimee Weber for she is the prophet sent unto my people and she truely is the best!

Cloistered monks painstakingly provided that translation of Ben's words from the original transcripts (which were lost in a fire or something.)

Because Haney Linden created the call for proposals that led to the creation of our city, we always wanted to honor him with a statue. Unfortunately, he was worried it would look like an attempt to garner favoritism and he wouldn't allow us to do it.

Now that Haney has gone missing, we are in the market for a new patron saint. :D

Um, we already have that?

It's called "Second Life" as a whole. The whole game. Has that. Already.

I really don't think so. As a whole, capitalism we got, and per sim we certainly have monarchies and dictatorships. But I haven't seen any shades of socialism (except Ulrika's), nor is there a theocracy. There isn't really even a Democracy other than the market driven "vote with our dollars" kind.

Don't get me wrong, am not complaining...I am just saying that an experiment in the style I described in my initial post doesn't actually exist right now and would be interesting to see.

Forseti, however, did bring up some valid concerns that could be fatal to the idea. Because of the voluntary nature of SL and participation in these sims, the results really wouldn't truly represent anything real world. But it could still be fun and interesting to see how these stories unfold.

Yeah, there goes my idea of starting a military dictatorship and invading Neualtenburg with my legion of 1000 newbies. :(

There is a democracy in SL -- Neualtenberg is a social democracy. :)

We even built a hybrid RL-SL voting infrastructure to support our election -- the first of its kind in SL! We used the Borda method of ranking to create scores which were then used to distribute seats in the representative assembly by means of the the Sainte-Laguë method. It was a lot of fun. :)

I have looked upon the words, and was filled with the spirit of Ben Linden. *makes Holy SL Logo gesture with left hand*

His Holy Words translate into this: "And lo, for all ye who dwell upon this Holy Sim will wear Hawaiian shirts and eat fritters."

So it is written! So let it be done!

But seriously, folks...

Aimee, that's an awesome idea! I've recently compared the government people like Ulrika to people who build airplanes, and the analogy seemed to fit rather well. Look at the research she and her people have done on the subject. They "built" Neualtenberg, right?

So then I started thinking... no, really. I did. :-) The airplane guys make some RL-type replicas, but they also make crazy stuff that's never existed before. If politics and government nuts and bolts get you off, then why not make some totally fake governments? Neualtenberg doesn't count. That's an actual attempt to organize things, rather than an experimental archetype created solely for giggles.

It would really be something to see folks building a fake theocracy without trying to throw out the bad parts. *imagining getting ported home because I was interrogated to death by the Inquisition* Or a communist sim, *imagining getting ported home because I was interrogated to death by the Secret Police* or whatever.

They could even make fake political parties with fake platforms, so they could get into heated debates without actually getting angry at each other. Everyone would be in on the joke. It would give the history buffs and poli-sci people a way to show the same diverse creativity that the designers and builders currently display. And then said designers and builders would get into the act, by sculpting holy statues or making uniforms for the fascists.

You've already mentioned the only real snag: getting enough people interested, and then holding that interest. Well, and it would kind of ruin the fun if the secret police came to get me and I said "Sorry, guys. I gotta log and go to work. You'll have to torture me later in the latest Cubey Terra VTOL Convertible Submersible Death Chair tomorrow."
