A River Runs Through It

If I have a river running through my property, am I ethically obligated to leave the river passable by everyone? If so, doesn't this mean that I can't limit access to my property at all? If that's the case, then I shouldn't by the property. But then there is nothing preventing somebody else from buying the property and limiting my access, except the hope that he has the same sense of civic responsibility that I have.

Or I could stay on the land and keep it open, but my neighbor might block his stretch.

I limited access to my parcel because I wanted to secure my possessions without having to take everything back into my inventory every time I log off. I was scolded by another resident for blocking access to the river. It seems to me that rivers should be public Linden land, and not count against the area of a parcel.

Does anyone have any thoughts about this issue?

I don't understand how someone could make off with your possesions while you're not there.

Invariably, when I'm trying to fly somewhere I get bonked by someone's security system and it's incredibly annoying.

As long as your possessions are not set to sell or set to allow people to make copies they should be secure, as in no one can take them.

Now if you just don't want people to see your possessions you would either have to take them into your inventory or place a transparent prim over them so that the become invisible. Then you could feel better about keeping your property open to the public.

What about my jet ski? Can't someone just hop on it and ride away?

No. Usually only the owner of an item can use it. Stuff left on your property is not in danger of being stolen.

As for blocking the water, whether its with ban lines, prims, or script, first I contact the person that is blocking the waterway and nicely ask them to unblock the water so that all may pass. If I get a good response, then that is that. If I get a bad response, I neg-rate and abuse report them (especially if its a ban script blocking access) after sending them an IM explaining exactly what I'm doing and why.

I dont understand how you can "block" a linden river on protected land. It's not your land and they should have autoreturn on anyway.

Unless you own the river.
Then I think you can do what you want with it. Maybe I am reading this wrong though, it seems like a total non-issue.

The parcel with the river on it is located in Gualala. I just bought it from ANSHECHUNG.COM.

Is it possible that the policies regarding rivers and parceling are different there than on regular old Linden land?

(I bought it the normal way, I believe, by clicking on the Buy button in the about land dialog.)

I just visited your parcel. It's a very interesting and unique 512 sq. m.

It is not (and was never) Linden land. The Lindens only sell land they own through the auctions.

You are free to do whatever you want with the land. Since you will probably have a lot of neighbors close by eventually, it would be a good thing to keep the water channel open for boaters. Also visitors and tourists would appreciate being able to travel through there without an obstracle.Yours is one of three channels that cuts through that part of the country and your property is in the middle of one of the straits. Someone boating along would have to turn around to continue their voyage unimpeded--although on further investigation I see that some other builders east of you have almost blocked access to your channel from that direction anyway.

You could block the channel with a dam or toll setup. Have people pay a toll to continue through the channel and maybe give them somethign in return? Although some may not enjoy the fact that the water channel is blocked and you might get flack for it.

Other options would include building a structure that spans the water, like this bridge, which would allow many folks to sail below it:

You could build your residence, as a part of the bridge, above the span like they did on the old London Bridge in England. That would be cool.

Or you could build your structure completely in the air and leave the ground as is:

Maybe you could build with the neighbors bordering your property to create a large space that connects to each other using your structure to bridge the areas currently separated by the water:

Then you could have people fish off the bridge and maybe catch a big one!

Have fun with your new land. That should make for some interesting situations.
