Linden Labs is a company that has developed a market and distributes a product to those who are interested in it. The "world" is a complex set of digital processes designed to invoke an intense emotional response from consumers. Most of Second Life is the imaginary invention of the minds of those who use it.

Linden Labs is not a "federal government". Philip Linden probably did not intend that phrase to be taken so seriously by SL's consumers, or if he did, he misspoke. A federal government is an institution to which well-defined localities give up sovereignty in exchange for collective security, common order, and prosperity. By definition, this cannot happen in SL, unless it happens in fictional form - that is, as a mass suspension of disbelief and an act of the collective imagination that denies reality. But if it's only imagination, then most of the underlying reasons for federalism cannot exist. Again, by definition, LL cannot exercise the controls and powers of a federal government, even in SL. To do so, frankly, would challenge the sovereignty of the United States and break quite a few laws. What LL can do is act like the private owner of a process commodity subject to U.S. laws, and it does and will continue to do so.

A little dose of reality to go with the morning forum outrage in your coffee. The consumers spoke, LL heard, and the idea of LL as a "federal government" is a "safe" thing for the company president to say: it reassures the majority who are acting like unreconstructed colonial Minutemen, and also reassures the minority who have the same dogged determinism as the pre-1917 Bolsheviks. Everybody is happy.

on the other hand ll implements change, and those changes often come from resident input.

the questions are:
- who has greater affect on the changes ll makes?
- why should those people have that affect?
- on a political basis, how does one maximize one's influence over ll?
- should one maximize one's influence?

some of these questions come up in some form in this thread /120/89/43251/1.html

decisions are made in sl, and the residents have some influence over those decisions. what that process is called isn't as interesting as the process itself.
